Have you ever reflected on the expressions we use in everyday speech?

You ever wonder where some of these expressions or sayings come from? For example who came up with the idea of asking permission to steal or sneak? Can I sneak by you or do you mind if I steal this pen for a minute? It's kinda hard to sneak by someone when you've announced it to the whole world.

Then there's the phrase every Tom, Dick and Harry etc... I guess I have a dirty mind because that phrase becomes explicit with an 's and the word is.

One phrase I never did like is "It could always be worse". Is that phrase honestly supposed to make someone feel better? A guy I worked with got divorced and he lost his home, custody of his children and a large portion of his savings to his wife who never worked a day in her life. One of my co-workers tryed to comfort him by saying it could always be worse, those words ended up in the recently divorced and depressed guy punching the coworker in the mouth. Strangely enough those words were prophetic because this poor guy lost his job and had charges pressed against him.

how about I could care less? It doesn't make any sense. It ought to be I couldn't care less, but noone ever uses that
