Have you ever purchased any sub-1000 car?

What's the most horrible thing ever happened to those cheap-car-buyers? Do you run into any accident because of the cheapness of a car?

I had a $500 car a year ago and it ran well in whole 6 months, for 2000 miles/month. However, I spent $400 to fix all problems in 6 months. :)

I had a $300 Mazda pickup truck that I bought because I had to haul a bunch of stuff. I drove it for about 4 weeks when I was moving all the stuff and then I promptly gave it away ;)

My dad bought a $528 1982 AWD Tercel wagon. Yes, $528. The owner was a foreign guy with a thick accnet & when we asked him what we wanted for it he said $528. So that's what it was.

Anyway, he had to have the engine re-built + transmission work, but once other than that it's been OK. Ugly as all hell, but he likes it.

about 10 years ago, I bought a 1980 VW Rabbit for 400.00---drove it for 9 months, put 36,000 miles on it and all I did was replace the starter. Got 500.00 trade-in for it on my next car.

My friend who I ride along w/ all the time drives a Mercedes 1983 190D I believe (diesel) anyways... it's value is like 700 dollars... one time his transmission got busted and he spent more money fixing it than the car is worth..

However I think it's a cool car...

67 raw horse power baby... The only fear it has are stoplights before a hill...

0-60 in 22 seconds-

Max Speed cannot exceed 65 MPH

Who wants some? :p

My first car, a 77 VW Scirocco, was $1000 and it ran fine right up until the asshole with the Caddy made a left in front of me and killed it.

I got mine for free, kinda. I just had to get it road worthy because it had been sitting for 11 years.

I don't think I want a newer car. Not anytime soon anyway. I can fix this car myself, but newer cars have sensors and electronics. The smaller cars are a pain to work on as well.

I've had four, all worked great, never left me stranded. Had to repace a total of 4 tires and one set of brakes. I usually keep one for 3-4 years.

My dad bought a 1990 Ford Ranger with 120,000 miles on it for $900. He has since put 40,000 miles on it and invested a whopping $0.00 in it :)

It's tough to beat a bargain like that!

I was very tempted to buy an '88 Honda CRX w/ 120,000 miles on for $800. But, it sold before I got a chance to look into it.

He invested $0.00? So...did he push the truck for 40,000 miles?
