Have you ever ordered a beer with lunch?

I have worked in a couple of large corporate office-type settings, and everyone seems to think alcohol consumption is still illegal. We once went out to a Tex-Mex joint once and I wanted to order a dollar Corona. The guys I were with freaked out and said "You shouldn't drink on the job!"

What is the big deal? It isn't like I am getting shitfaced and going back to work. I ordered it anyway and felt no repercussions. Pretty sure my boss knew, thanks to them telling him.

Does anyone ever drink with their lunch? Sort of nice to have a cold beer on a hot summer afternoon 🙂 Too bad it's 9F here today.

Um, yes I have... I thought everyone had ordered a beer with lunch at least at some point.

I like a Guinness and a burger.

Corporate policies can be black and white and you could get fired.
I've never risked it.

Anyone with common sense would allow it, but corporate policies aren't created with common sense in mind.

I don't know about that. I know if I have a beer or two at lunch I am pretty tired the rest of the afternoon and pretty much don't do anything the rest of the day. I could see a workplace banning it because of decreased productivity.

I'll go to the pub for lunch to grab a burger and a pint usually once a week. It's not enough alcohol for me to notice any effects and so I don't have a problem if others did the same in similar moderation.

Risk vs. Reward. It's just not worth it. People can be so petty all it takes is the wrong manager or administrative person to walk into the restaurant/pub you are at and see you drinking and they now associate you with that.

I can wait till I get home.

It wasn't too long ago that the General Motor's facilities (and I assume other manufacturers) in Germany had vending machines right on the production floor that doled out beer.

PFfffft. I used to have 4 margarita lunches. Often with my boss.

I do on occasion, but only if I am with the boss and he/she is doing it too.

Only once, but only because it was my first time in a Japanese restaurant and my boss wanted me to try a specific beer.

Other than that I have never even witnessed someone order a beer at a work lunch, which is strange because the same people order beers after work when we go out.

When I used to work swing shift at a warehouse in college me and a buddy would take our lunch around 7pm and head to "On the Border" near work and get a bucket of beers. Sure made the rest of the night go by easier!

Sure I have. Like the OP said, I'm not getting shit faced, I am of age and I don't operate heavy machinery. I think a fair number of people have probably had past jobs where it was against policy, and continue forward with that assumption.

At the same time, it is probably something best "felt out" first, like having lunch with your boss and they order a drink. Policies and personalities can certainly vary. Thankfully, the people I work with are all cool.

I crack up when people are in my bar and are like "I've got to go back to work, I can't drink" or react funny to another co-worker having a beer or two. Relax fuckos, there is nothing wrong with having a a few drinks and then working.
