Have you ever noticed that when you order something that hasn't shipped

I've noticed this from a number of smaller retailers.

I just had this happen with a reseller through Amazon. I bought a game that the next day was $15 cheaper direct from Amazon (that Amazon didn't even sell the day before) so I emailed the seller and said I wanted to cancel it. I had received a email that same day saying it wouldn't even ship out until 1/2/09 but all the sudden after telling them I wanted to cancel it, they not only haven't replied to that request but I get a email this morning telling me the item has shipped out.

4 days early all the sudden by some miracle this items is available and ships.

Seems a bit fishy IMO.

Same thing happened from another smaller online retailer a few years ago when I bought a digital camera.

I had a similar experience. The item I wanted wasn't out of stock but for some reason it didn't ship for 2 weeks. I sent an email and called to cancel the order. I received a reply email stating that my order would be shipped the next day.
I told the retailer it was too late and I would dispute the charges if they sent it. The dipshits sent it 2 days later and I disputed the charges with AMEX. I didn't have to pay for the item and I sent an email to the retailer stating that if they wanted their item back they could retrieve it from outside my front door. They never sent anyone to get their package.

I wish it would work for me with buy.com. I preordered a book that came out Dec. 2. They never sent it. They won't send it. I can't cancel. Their customer service is worthless over the phone and take about a week to respond via email. The book briefly went out of stock for a few days about a week after it came out. Since then, it has been in stock. Still they won't ship it. They never charged my credit card either. For such a simple process, they sure are awful at doing their primary business function.

I bet the reason why it shipped is because they bought it as a gift from amazon and pocketed the shipping + leftover amount.

I wouldn't know, I don't cancel purchases after they have been made. I make sure of exactly what I want before I give my word to buy it.

Purchased a monitor from Dell, d.o.a. Had it replaced. The 2nd monitor was d.o.a. Called, spent multiple hours on the phone with Dell - couldn't do an rma unless tech support said it was dead. Tech support couldn't diagnose it unless I had a complete dell system. Hours on the phone. Finally they agreed to replace it again. A week passed. 2 weeks passed. OOS on their website. Called, they didn't know when they'd get a new batch in. Finally, "just cancel my order. I found a suitable monitor from Gateway." The monitor that hadn't shipped, and wasn't in stock arrived on my porch before noon the next day.

No purchase has been completed since retailers don't charge until an item ships. Up to that point, I don't see any moral obligation to follow through without any fee/fine. It not a matter of not knowing what you want but the retailer's problem in not shipping as promised/expected.
