have you ever noticed how id Software makes the coolest graphics w/ the least computation?

I've always noticed how the id Software people have some sort of amazing talent for creating worlds that look really really cool and pretty without using much processing power (relatively).

I mean look at the awesome visuals of quake3 that can run well on 500MHz

then look at UT2K4 or whatever that requires the newest fastest stuff and still looks like crap

Id typically releases their engines a little bit behind the curve of average graphics capability out there.

Carmack does optimize for video cards in assembly, but so does everyone else. He was a pioneer once in skills and methodology, but nothing special is really going on there anymore. Don't expect too much of Doom 3 - it will be nothing special. The trend has moved away from sheer graphical performance and into where the focus should always have been - gameplay! That's why Counter-Strike has been a hit for so long.

One engine I find to be particularly amazing, is the Serious Sam engine. Beautiful graphics, equal performance on a 500mhz compared to a 2ghz... Well not equal, but close enough

I don't know if I totally agree with you on this. Quake 3 was not intended to be the top of the line graphically as much as a game fine tuned for fast paced internet Game play...and it was released a long, long time ago...at the same time as Unreal Tournament. You could argue which one of those looked better, but you couldn't say that eithe was significantly behind the other.

I do believe that Carmack is one really smart guy when it comes to 3D graphics. I really think Doom 3 will shine in the graphics department and will run on the widest range of hardware at a decent clip. One thing that is true though...there are a ton of really smart people working in games these days and so Carmack is just another one of them and no longer the sole graphics god.

Just the same, I still expect Doom 3 to be great, as I do Half-Life 2 and others. I really hope Carmack sticks around to do at least one more engine after the D3 engine.

Who else writes entire engines by themselves?

Carmack IS God.

So can Quake II, actually it ran great on 200 MHz machines and deathmatch and CTF were sweeet.

<--- ran it on his P166/24mb RAM/S3 Virge :) I was good on that - when I upgraded and was finally able to play in something other than 320x240, I kicked ass ;)

Agreed, Carmack is amazing, Abrash made a book talking about some experiences together, they are both amazing graphics programmers.

Too bad id software has been making the same game with updated graphics since like 1995

But it still looks great running at a high resolution on a modern machine.

Who cares about the game, it's all about the Engine.
JK > Q3
Rune > Unreal
NOLF 2 > Blood 2

Far Cry won't be the best game, but I can see some good games using that Crytek engine on the horizon.

you guys are going to eat your words when D3 comes out, you haven't seen (or heard) anything like this before - anyone who has played the Deathmatch demo from Quakecon can back me up on that.....

you will believe

Carmack is the man.

Yeah, now if only they could make a game that was worth playing. Their "games" are really just a powerful engine with some crap thrown on the end. Only those who license them do you see a game that's actually worth playing.

*shrug* somebody soon after will come out with a game that's more than a few guys running around in some ridiculous, dark, techno-dungeon. Oh wait, we've already got them. The quote above about ID churning out the same game since 1995 with updated graphics is uncomfortably close to the truth. Back when Doom came out its gameplay was empty, but good. Nowadays ID still has yet to embrace anything meaningful. I don't want to play through a novel, but I want something more than just level after level in the same dreary surrounding killing stupid creatures that are half machine/half skeleton.

Then go play everquest or kotor or something. Recently I loved max payne 2, and kotor. But I still like quake/doom for some quick shoot everything (especially multiplayer) fun. Just because its simple doesn't mean its bad. All pacman does is eat dots and sometimes a ghost but thats fun too :D

Pacman = boring. I'd like to think we've moved ahead in games to where they are somewhat more enjoyable than pacman or quake :) I did like MP2 and KOTOR. I never finished quake or quake II because they were interminably tedious. Frankly I'd take Half Life 2 99 times out of 100 before I'd even drive to the store to pick up Doom 3 for free.
