?A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasury.?

-- attributed to Alexander Tytler, Scottish historian.

Isn't this something conservatives use to somehow warn us about liberals ? How so ans what sense do you make out of it? Is this really a concern?

For a true believer an assumption is just as good as the truth...even better it's pure knowledge.

I used to be smart, or a bit so I guess. Now I just feel. I feel that figuring out what epistemology is is going to hurt my head. So I will ask you, if I may, to put your post into simple words of feeling. What did you feel that you wanted to tell me?

The quote is patently absurd. The public waking up and realizing they can vote themselves money from the public treasury? Huh? The treasury is money that got there from their taxes. It's there to run the government. Think!

AFA the topic title goes, well yeah. Albert Einstein comes to mind for a person who achieved what he did by discarding cherished assumptions. There's a saying:

"Only the hand that erases can write the true thing."

The ancients who wished to illustrate illustrious virtue throughout the kingdom, first ordered well their own states. Wishing to order well their states, they first regulated their families. Wishing to regulate their families, they first cultivated their persons. Wishing to cultivate their persons, they first rectified their hearts. Wishing to rectify their hearts, they first sought to be sincere in their thoughts. Wishing to be sincere in their thoughts, they first extended to the utmost their knowledge. Such extension of knowledge lay in the investigation of things.

Things being investigated, knowledge became complete. Their knowledge being complete, their thoughts were sincere. Their thoughts being sincere, their hearts were then rectified. Their hearts being rectified, their persons were cultivated. Their persons being cultivated, their families were regulated. Their families being regulated, their states were rightly governed. Their states being rightly governed, the whole kingdom was made tranquil and happy.

From the Son of Heaven down to the mass of the people, all must consider the cultivation of the person the root of everything besides.

It cannot be, when the root is neglected, that what should spring from it will be well ordered. It never has been the case that what was of great importance has been slightly cared for, and, at the same time, that what was of slight importance has been greatly cared for.

Well, what are the two largest government programs?

Well, what are the two government programs that help the most Americans, the most?

How helpful are those programs going to be when people who are dependent on them wake up one day and find they are cut because we can't afford them? Yeah, real helpful.

You might be more convincing if you could:
(a.) spell half of the words in your posts
(b.) use proper sentences
(c.) try to make some attempt at not being a 100% partisan hack.

Who are these ancients? We can hear in these words the real meaning of Jihad, the notion that the real war in life is with the false self, the ego or armor of denial that separates us from awareness of self hate. I would only caution that it is not in the knowledge of things, if by things we mean external, for real knowledge, if I may say so, is knowledge of the self. Sincerity is the only cure their is for self-deception and it is driven either by deep need or tremendous curiosity.
