Hmm....when I was still in school (middle school really), there were several people I ran across who really had difficulties reading. We would have been about 13 years old at the time. However, I think the problem for most of them was really that they just didn't know English very well (native Spanish speakers), not that they couldn't read at all.

I can't understand how someone can function properly in society without being able to read. How can you work even the simplest job??

Aside: Nice quote meltdown

On a related note: Does anyone remember learning to read? I remember struggling briefly after I switched from the books that had two words on a page to basic books...but after that...nothing. Its almost like I always knew.

I remember reading all the road signs while we were on tips right after learning to read.

Drove my folks NuTs. 😉

I used to teach a junior high Sunday school class at church. I had at least two 8th graders that could "read" only in the loosest definition of the word.

And I can't read or write. Im transcribing this via my love-chimp.

Yes! I have met children around the age of 7 and 8 who can't read. It's sad. I don't think it's as common as it used to be though.

: ) Amanda

I have met a couple of adults (in their 40s) that could not read. That was back in the early 1980s when I met them.

I was homeschooled until 6th grade, nothing wrong with that if it's done properly. I don't know about high school, though, few parents have the knowledge to teach an entire series of high school classes well.

The two brightest, most exceptional kids I have ever met were homeschooled. They had the advantage of having extremely intelligent, exceptional parents.

My grandpa, who is now 70 years old, worked in the oil field until he retired. There were only a handful of things that he had to actually read, most of the stuff was memorized and he did his job well.

His father was a farmer and was very mean. He forced him to work rather than go to school. He never learned how to read. He is by far one of the most smart people i've ever met. He can work and fix anyones car and is very mechanically minded and was raised to be the hardest worker you've ever seen.

He is able to read only a little bit. And primarily he can only read words that have no hidden sounds.
