Have you ever majorly sprained your ankle?

Last March I sprained my ankle for the first time in like 4 years but it was the worst I've done. I thought I had broken it at first...anyway I rested it and now I'm trying to get back to using it but it is stiff and bothers me after using it for a while. How long have your ankle sprains taken to get to a point of no stiffness and pain?

When I used to play soccer a few years ago, some of the ankle sprains took anywhere from 6-8 months until I felt well playing on them. Even with that, I would still wear an ankle brace for support because they take a LONG time to completely heal. All last year I also wore an ankle brace during football cause I had fcvked it up during the summer practices and it killed during the season.. That was a year ago and it's pretty good these days.

I tore all the tendons/ligaments/whatever on the outside of my left ancle back in HS. I was standing on the side of my ancle with my foot off to the other side. When I picked my leg up off the ground, the foot snapped back in place. I think that's called straining it and not spraining it. It still hurts like a motherfvcker when it gets cold outside. I work my legs a LOT and it's still never ever totally healed properly. It's still weaker than my right, and I get annoying sympathy pains when I see someone else roll their ancle.

Ankle sprains can vary tremendously as far as severity goes. My senior year in HS I sprained the CRAP out of my left ankle playing hoop. I heard three LOUD cracks as my ankle turned over. I thought for sure it was busted. Turns out, I was back to 90% in only two weeks. Not too bad.

Then there are the high-ankle sprains. These suck. It can be months to recover from one of these, even with proper physical therapy.

Ankle sprains are all different. Good luck with it.

I did the same thing while at a Cricket practice when I was just out of High School.
We were doing fielding drills and we and this other guy went for the ball I jumped up to catch the ball and when I landed my right ankle landed on his left foot. Fvck it hurt, in fact just thinking about the pain I felt that day, made my ankle ache just then.

It took me around 8-9months to be sweet again, I missed the rest of the season and had it strapped up and all that for months.

EDIT: Oops to actually answer your question.
No it never did properly heal, even with doctors help/non help.
I still play sport hard, the tendons/muscles/.... are still really strong, its just not the same as before.
I maybe had a 95% heal. Just my own estimate.

I sprained an ankle 25 years ago and it still gets stiff and sore sometimes. I also resprain it about once or twice per year. It never was the same again.

depends on the severity. i once couldn't realy walk for a week. the damage to the connective tissues has a widerange..

I messed up my ankle back in May -- both broke and sprained. The break is healed now, but the sprain ... The doctor said it may be a year or more before the sprain is healed, and even then, it may never be "right" again.

I sprained my left ankle when I was drunk and slipped and fell down some hotel stairs.
This was, of course, roughly 3 hours before I took a 7 hour plane ride, so my ankle expanded and I couldn't walk on it for almost a month and it still isn't healed (sprain happened in Jan.)
Lesson learned. Avoid stairs while drinking.

It will never heal back to its original strength, it took me about 8 months to a year to fully recover. But then I rolled it again playing soccer, and I have to wear hightops to prevent it now.

yeah from what i understand, once u sprain it, it's ever 100% again. I sprained it pretty bad playing basketball in august, and i can still tell that it's not 100% right now. Might've been better to have just broken it

A major sprain healed in 2 weeks? Not physically possible.

it's about the only thing I've ever had happen to myself... never broken a bone before, never had a cavity, but i have sprained my ankle... i was a few weeks before i could run again (I was playing ultimate frisbee at the time)

When I was in college I sprained my ankle after a 5'2" girl tried to block me in volleyball and came over my side. I was so POed since she can't even reach over the net. Anyway, I couldn't walk for 2 weeks. It took about 4 months to heal to the point where I felt confident about going all out. I've had tons of lesser sprains but that one was the worst.

Agreed

I'm on 6months of recovery and I can play hoops on it if I strap the brace down VERY tight.
It will never be the same again I know.
Breaks are better than sprains no question. Bones can heal.

Rule of thumb is if your sprain your ankle, knee etc. it will never be 100% again. Wear a nice brace on it and you have to ratched down to 95% (unless you have some uber-physical therapist)

First time, I sprained my ankle was about 10 years ago playing volleyball. Couldn't put any weight on it for a few days. After about 3 weeks, I could play again with a brace but couldn't do much jumping. After about 6 weeks, I was almost back to normal. After a year or so, I stopped noticing the tightness.

Second time I sprained my ankle was a few months ago. After about a week, I could walk on it, but it was still painful. After 4 weeks, I went to Disneyland and was able to walk around all day, but it was pretty sore afterwards. After about 7 weeks, I started playing volleyball again and it's been ok since then. Now it's been 15 weeks, and i'm pretty much full strength, but it's still not completely healed yet. On a regular basis, I'll step on it funny and feel a little twinge of pain. And it still feels pretty tight.

A severely sprained ankly will almost never return to 100%, especially when not treated correctly. If you sprain it when you are young, you will more likely heal faster and better than someone who sprains it when they're in their late 20's and up.

I sprained my left ankle on Saturday playing football. It's not very bad, I can walk around on it, it just hurts quite a bit. I'm thinking about getting a cane for a couple weeks.

I've sprained my left ankle 2 times and my right ankle 3 times, the last time being about 7 years ago and they still hurt when the cold weathers drifts in. Try using Ben Gay or Icy Cold when your ankle gets stiff or numb, it helps a bit.
