A lot of stuff, even on surge protectors when it happened. I live in S.FL so lightning / surges are very common, it's just a matter of time. Nothing is safe unless it's unplugged.

A tree was hit outside my home one time, lightning went through the tree, and apparently through the roots which ran under my driveway and at one point it had enough power to blow a chunk of concrete upwards. My car was parked on the driveway and the engine control module was damaged.

Inside the house, it got an answering machine (this was a few years back, now I use voicemail), a receiver, and a few other things that I can't remember. I remember the answering machine because the problem was not immediately noticible... it'd work fine until it came time to end the call / hang up, whereby it would remain off-hook and cause the lines to go dead.

I would go around the house and unplug the phones each time and when I was done everything would work again, until the next time the ans.machine answered. Of course, I was rarely home when it answered... so... anyway... I figured it out after a few days.

I've lost stuff since, a modem here and there, routers, a motherboard, etc. I have my PC's on UPS but the surges still get through sometimes.

2 routers, nic, a modem or two. I now have a surge protector with the cable run through.

I live in South FL the lighting strike capital of the world (or so I've heard) so yes, I've lost a router, cable modem and my last roommate lost a mother board, memory and processor.

He was pissed because only his PC got fried, I was like "WTF, you're mad because my PC didn't get fried also?"

Lets see...... surge happened...... I lost:

Power supply in PC
(2) hard drives in PC
Moboard

It was either a surge or the power supply faulted and fried the hard drives and moboard....

My 32" TV is all messed up because of one. The picture is too big for the screen, it curves in on the sides and some menu options are gone.

No. Lightning tried to destroy my computer once, but my computer overpowered it. Basically a thunderstorm cloud was over my house, my computer got hit by lightning, and my computer blue screened, beeped, and smoke started coming out of it. But then suddenly the smoke got sucked back into the case, the beeping stopped, and the PC recovered from the error. Just then, my computer shot the lightning bolt back into the cloud and dissolved it. The walls in my room temporarily expanded outward just like in the Matrix.
