Have you ever lied or exaggerated on your resume?

I'm not talking about wording things a certain way to make them sound professional.

I'm talking about "being highly skilled" with certain things while only barely touching said things.

Or just outright lying about certain skillsets on your resume?

I haven't, and some folks have said I was nuts not to do so.

edit: poll added :p

Well, on college applications I and most of the people I knew would probably be guilty of a little "stretching" of the truth. I don't know the exact statistics, but its a pretty common thing. Maybe not just completely making up random stuff, but deffinitely most people "overestimated" the number of hours they spent on different clubs, and also usually acted like they had a largerr role in said clubs then they often did. But the big stuff like GPA, SAT, and what courses you took is sent by your school and the College Board, so you cant really lie on the really important stuff.

The worst I've done is emphasize the aspects of my previous jobs that were more relevent to my future jobs and de-emphasized the aspects that won't help me get a job.

I wouldn't mislead anyone about the skills I have, because I'll actually need to be able to USE those skills in my next job. Contrary to popular believe, you can't just "pick it up" in the first week. I'm a programmer, and I can learn a language in a few days, but I can easily tell the difference between a person who has used a language for years and someone who is still learning it.

We've had people lie about their abilities to get a job, they get fired as quickly as they were hired.

I have not yet, but I had considered it. In the IT field you can get into trouble pretty quickly. 99% of the interviews I have been on included a pretty heavy tech session. The area I may consider fudging is education. Add a few certs and change my AAS to a BS ;) I have yet to be asked to provide proof of my certs or education.

My former employer had a guy who probably thought the same thing. But they did check, and the college he supposedly graduated from had no idea who he was.

He lasted 2 weeks I think.

a few years ago when i lived in canada i lied about everything on my resume i just listed jobs in brazil that were relevant to what i was applying to but nobody hired me cause i wasn't a canadian citizen anyway...

nowadays i've had enough work experience that i don't need to lie but its ok to exaggerate certain things! :)

I say I LOVE teamwork. That's a load of bullshit. I also say I like people, even more bullshit.

My skillset is authentic however :)

Never, the line of work I'm in you'd be able to sniff out bullsh!t from a mile away.

Integrity is more important to me than making someone think I'm better than I am.

No but some things sound more important than they really were at the time. I had my last one done professionally and it really made a difference.

Nope... interviewers will see past it in a second.

I interviewed a guy for a position. After a few very easy tech questions, it was obvious he fibbed on his resume. I ended up switching the questions to logic riddles and he couldn't even answer those, or at least go through a logical process. The moral of the story -- Don't lie.

You can totally be fired and blocked from being hired at a company by lying on your resume, ESPECIALLY about easily verifiable things like education and work experience (jobs you didn't have, or dates you didn't actually work.)

let me guess. You got fired due to lying on your resume, and decided to start your own company because no one else wants to hire you? ;)
