I have. I drove college students from bar back to campus and I didn't even know who they were. They gave me tip for getting back to the campus. :)

sure... few weeks ago helped a volunteer fireman. had a flat tire and was walking to the nearest convenience store to buy fix-a-flat. picked him up, took him to the store, went back and made sure it worked...

i hitchhiked home from Woodstock '94. upstate NY all the way back to hicktown, Ontario. after an experience like that, you feel a little more for people that are down on their luck.

A couple of times. I went to the local one-stop-shop grociery/electronics/blah blah blah store on a rainy day and this bum was sitting under the overhang near the door trying to keep warm. He asked for some money to get something to eat so I gave him a $10 spot and smiled and continued on to the store to pick up crap, and he followed me in and went into the grociery section. I don't remember what I was headed to buy, but when I came out, he was sitting back in the same spot with a bottle of wine, chugging away. :| I told him to fvcking get a job and went home.

that was the last time I've ever given a hand-out to anyone I didn't already know, and it will remain the last.

Yeah. Helped a guy push his car through a busy intersection and into a parking lot (~200 feet) in the middle of the night. Bought a guy some groceries because he was hungry. Stuff like that.

Caught a lady in Tokyo subway when she fell backwards near the top of an escalator. She acted like I was trying to steal her bags... helping out doesn't always work out the way one would hope.

Yeah, I know...I've gotten so I don't really trust people enough to help them anymore.

If by "helping a total stranger" you mean "uppercutting a total stranger in the face for absolutely no reason", then yes, I have helped many total strangers.

The first thing that comes to mind is one time I was coming out of where I work (a grocery store) after buying some groceries and there was this large woman (maybe late 50s) with a baby. She was asking everyone for a ride because her son couldn't pick her up or something. So, after almost just avoiding her, I decided to help her out and offered to give her a lift... not knowing where she lived. So I'm driving this lady and we're just doing small talk and she's like 'you're very nice and brave considering you don't know me and you wouldn't know if I tried to rob you and stuff' so I'm getting a little nervous, but I just try driving her as quickly as possible to her destination, which turned out to be downtown in the ghetto. So after taking a few lefts and rights I finally got her dropped at a gas station by her house - she didn't want me coming any further 'cause she said I could get shot! So I did a quick prayer and got out of there in speedy time. :D

So that's my short heroic adventure.
