My friend is having the above strange problem.

IE works fine, then all of a sudden, won't allow surfing
around 7~7:30pm until way into the night. And when he
tries again the next morning, it works again. Then it won't
around 7pm.

This has been going on for the past week and it is driving
him nuts! The ISP provider's (Verizon DSL) tech support
can't seem to isolate the problem.

Hardware issue? Software problem? Don't know where to start...

WHAT CAN HE DO???????????????????

His environment:

Dell 2400 Dimension (new computer. problem occurred first day)
win xp home
384mb ram (one 128 pc2700, and one 256 pc2100 ddr ram)
80 gig HDD
Verizon DSL with Westel 2110 DSL modem

you know it your situation sounds awfully like one of those old free juno connections. the one's where they limit the amount of hours you can go on and kick you off when its peak like around 7 to 8 to get you to pay for their 10 buck service.

Only IE? or the entire internet?
The whole internet. You know, the dreadful
"~ the page could not be found" or something.

But for a $29.99 DSL service?!

I've had that happen to me and I have DSL The Issue is that around that time is when everyone is home using electrical appliances, using their telephones etc etc . In other words there is greater noise in the phone line. If your friend's DSL line has marginal quality (like mine did) then it can be the case that at peak times the internet gets borked. Fortunately for me, I think the phone company upgraded the wiring as now it works smoothly

In Houston Roadrunner was giving me that problem for the past week. Thank God that's over now... I had to constantly reset the modem and leave all connections unplugged until the modem linked up with Roadrunner, then I could only plug in one computer directly to the modem, and if I tried to change cables for another computer to connect, I'd lose the internet and have to reset the cable modem yet again. It sucked that I couldn't connect through a router, cuz that would have made things a whole bunch easier. I was getting all pissed off about it too, but finally yesterday (after about 5 days of that crap) it started working again.

Long story short. I called Roadrunner various times throughout that trying period and, though most of what they said was of no help at all as it always seems, they always told me that the whole Houston area in general was having issues at the moment and to try resetting the modem the next morning and giving it another shot. Something similair to this might be happening with you. Connection problem on the server side and not the client side. If so, only option is to wait it out, but do give the provider a call to see if there are any problems, because otherwise you could just be wasting time... good luck!

I had this problem when I had DSL. No resolution that I know of....I just canceled and got cable.

That being said, it could easily be your wiring. You can ask for a tech to come out and look, but it will be a while before anything happens, unless he can switch you instantly to a pair with better balance.

Well I guess your ISP has something to do with it...
The regularity means that it is not a random problem.

If you are using a newer router and/or wireless router, someone may have gone into the router setup and restricted access during those times via the router.......

So... Check your router settings.... Set a password if you haven't and use WEP encryption if you have un secured wireless currently.

Thanks for the replies.

He does not have a router connected to it.

One local tech person told us that he encountered
the same issue before and that it may be
due to a newly introduced virus that "gradually
eats into it." He advised to reinstall win xp.

I'll keep you guys posted.

In the mean time, more inputs are appreciated.

I would try a different computer, if he doesnt have one, take yours over if that is possible. I would almost bet it has nothing to do with the computer and the internet tech support person either doesnt know or cant say. I used to do tech support for ameritech.net dsl and we had problems like this, for several months because they didnt own enough IP's, so at peak times when they all got used, if somebody tried to connect, it would bump somebody off that had been on the longest.

Go to the trend micro housecall and run a virus scan before you reinstall the os.

I had the same problem with DSL and resolved it the same way. Went to cable.

Everyday around 5:30 to 6pm when everyone got home it would lose it's connection. I was just outside of the range for DSL. Of course they didn't tell me that when I signed up for it.

I have heard of bad street lights causing this to happen. Check when you street lights turn on and off and see if u loose connection when they turn on. If it does I recommend a BB gun to solve your problem :)

Verizon support sucks... they are never helpful... they need to get those ni.. african americans reading their troubleshooting guide scripts and get some real techs to do support.

They need to provide some real service

don't this it anymore than a joke :D

I'm also thinking it might be street light or some timered electrical event. Since it always is from 7-7:30. Does your friend have any neighbors who have dsl that experience the same problem?

edit:

Tell your friend to visit the Verizon support forum on DSLreports.com

Verizon Forum

they have techs who monitor that board that can help and send trouble tickets

i had the same problem with roadrunner, intermittent bad connection...

i recommend capturing some pings and tracert's to log files and keep them at hand when calling tech support....

eg: ping yahoo.com -n 300 > pinglog.txt
tracert yahoo.com > tracertlog.txt

Yep. Happened with Bellsouth. The problem is that Bellsouth is satan and wouldn't fix their lines. It happened when the streetlights came on.
