Have you ever heard of a CPU having this problem? EDIT: FIXED

Ok I have an ASUS P4PE which uses the 845 chipset and is supposed to support the 533FSB 3.06ghz HT CPU. Now I was able to get one at a good price off ebay and I have received it, the guy assures me it works perfectly and he has a great profile so I'm inclined to believe him. Upon plugging the CPU in though, upgrading from my 2.53ghz CPU, it detects the multiplier at 12x when it should be 23x. The highest the FSB can be raised to is 230 and even then that?s only about 2.7ghz. The BIOS detects it as a hyper threaded CPU and in windows it correctly displays 3.06ghz hyper threaded CPU but at @ 1.6ghz.

So what?s going on? Why is the multiplier reading 12, it should be 23 and as you all well know you can?t change a P4 multiplier. I have tried everything, latest BIOS, older BIOS's, cleared the CMOS, re seated the CPU, nothing has worked. My mobo was one of the first to support this CPU and many sites reviewed it using my exact board so it should work in it. Now I and most of my tech savvy friends are inclined to believe the CPU is fine there is just some problem with the mobo. Since a CPU should either work, or not work if it?s broken shouldn?t it?

Also I don?t know anyone with a 478 board willing to swap the CPU out and try it in their board for me as most of my friends have AMDs, so testing the CPU in another board isn?t an option right now.

Really I'd just like opinions on if people think it?s a CPU problem or mobo problem because if its mobo then I?m happy to resell it on ebay, and get a shiny new nforce 4 and A64 CPU later this year instead for an upgrade. I just don?t want to resell it if it?s a dud.

Thanks.

Do you have the latest BIOS for your board? It may not be a fault of the CPU, but in the way the board is accessing it.

Nevermind guys I found out the problem, the CPU is actually a MOBILE 3.06ghz, but he marketed it as a desktop and mobile chip i assumed laptop 3.06 CPUs and desktop ones were the same. It seems the mobile 3.06 chips have a multiplier of 12 so you need a desktop mobo capable of very high FSB settings (250 just to get it to default speed) in order to use it.

Moral of the story, read sellers auctions carefully, I should of picked up on that but I and I bet the other 10 or so bidders didn't. The good news is its not busted so I can probably recoup my money on ebay.

Thanks anyway guys.

Or get a good 865\875 board and overclock that thing.

wow.. get some real nice ram (pc4000?), and overclock that mofo! with that much mem bandwidth that'd be gooood
