I believe they take two different kinds of lasers, therefore making it impossible for a CD-ROM to play a DVD. The people may have been thinking about video cds.

Well actually there are CD-RW drives that can read DVDs. They are called DVD CD-RW drives :). Toshiba and Ricoh make em. Some other too.

Nah, it's impossible. If you don't believe me, rip open your DVD-ROM and you'll find two seperate lenses.

If it can read dvd then it is a dvd drive per definition ergo it is impossible for it to be an cd rom drive!

You can burn 20 minutes of DVD (MPEG-2) onto a CD-R and play back on any DVD or CD player as long as it can read CD-R. Maybe that is what people are talking about.

<< The Ricoh 9060A does CDRWs and DVD... >>

Indeed it can, it's a 6x4x24 CDRW and a 4x DVD ROM

They also have a 9120 coming out soon, it's a 12x10x32 with a BURNProof type thingy, and I believe it's 6 or 8x DVD...

I'd venture to say that he has a DVDRom and didn't know it.
An Asus Tray Loading DVDRom looks nearly indentical to their CDRoms for example. And a DVDRom will of course read both.

But a plain simple CDROM can not. (Because of the laser, as has been said)

If you have a dvd player you can rip the dvd movie and then go Here and get this program and change to the mpeg4 format and you will be able to fit the movie on a 700m cdr. Then play the movie from your cdrom. What i heard anyways. I don't have a dvd to try out.
