Have you ever had your credit card compromised before? Like many others here I try to use my credit card for everything, and I religiously pay it off several times a month. Unlike many though I don't really yet have a lot of expenses, currently live at home with parents so most of my purchases are either eating out, small purchases here and there odds and ends, and sometimes large electronics and computer purchases. Over the past 4 years I've had my credit card compromised twice, though it has never affected my credit and I've never been liable for any charges.

The first time was my fault probably, the second was not. The first time both my and my mothers CC numbers were stolen, probably from the trash outside our house as we were not shredding our statements at the time. I now don't get any statements mailed to me at all. I get an electronic statement. The credit card company called me at home with red flags on the account. There had been several purchases down town in the past few hours, at a gas station, at a sushi place, and at a hardware store totalling about 400 bucks. I had been at home all day. They sent me an affidavit to sign to that effect and I was not liable for any of the charges. They sent me a new card.

The second time I got a call at work saying that my CC had been compromised and that they were issuing me a new card. There were no charges on the account. I asked them how they knew the number had been compromised if there were no charges and the guy said that what happens fairly often is that the police capture thieves in possession of bulk quantities of numbers. But the guy was not able to tell me for sure. All these accounts are then closed and new cards reissued. Again I held no liability.

I have no idea where my card number was stolen from the second time. I use my card online sometimes but not all that often.

It's happened more than once but the only incident I recall is when Steam got hacked back in 2007. The same week that Steam got hacked someone spent up a bunch of charges on my CC. The CC company of course did not hold me accountable for the charges.

No it was a Master Card. Don't think you can get discover here in Canada, no one takes it anyway. I was contacted about the breach before receiving the card. It didn't just one day show up in the mail like it sounds like yours did. Also they immediately cancelled my old card.

Don't forget CasioTech.

Only time my CC was compromised was due to geeks.com being hacked. I wont shop there anymore. Even when they have "Hacker Safe" all over their site.

Did you place your order through PayPal? Just curious cause their site shows PayPal as a payment option.

Aside from some obvious precautions like not purchasing from shady looking sites and always making sure the site uses encrypted connections all the way I'm not sure there is much one can do about net security. At least when it comes to shopping. I'm just careful that I verify each purchase on my statement, I remember making each purchase.

I have one card that has had 3 different numbers in a year and a half now. I am going to cancel it.

It doesn't really affect me as I have not been on the hook for anything. Still it's not comfortable knowing that the cc carrier is obviously still linking the compromised accounts somehow.
