Saw a strange large grapefruit like fruit today at Costco. Curious, I bought some to try out. Turns out it's pummelo which I found out is the largest citrus fruit. It's not bitter like grapefruit and is actually sweet. If you never had it, I suggest you try some as it's excellent!

There are just too many things I have never tried.

If I see some, I'll give it a try.

Yeah, there isn't much fruit inside, considering how big the things are.

I tried one, tart and bitter, and I damn near had to use a chain saw to open the thing. Perhaps it wasn't ripe?

Yes, I love them, but I can never eat that skin on it. Too tough. I have to peel that part as well.

They are great. I like how the cells that make up the fruit are harder and not mushy like regular grapefruit. That is the best part for me.

The grapefruit tree in our backyard is a grapefruit/pummelo cross. It is more cold tolerant than straight grapefruit. The fruit has a mild and sweet taste and the inside is silver in color. The rind is ~1/2 inch thick.

...would you eat the rind on a grapefruit???

Looks interesting, will try it next time. Is there a specific way of cutting/eating the fruit?

Not really, I usually peel off the skin and rind then just pull the pieces apart. Take off the membrane around the pieces and eat.

I just tried pummelo today... I was expecting more, but it just reminds me more of grapefruit than anything else (I can't stand grapefruit). It's not sweet at all, and while it's not as bitter as grapefruit, it's still bitter.

It was bearable though with a sprinkling of sugar on top.

its just about the greatest citrus fruit.. i love that the flesh is like oranges... except so much more firm... i like to peel the skin (not just the thick rind) off each segment and grab the big flesh and chomp

I got kicked out of a grocery store for attempting to juggle them once... That didn't turn out so well. Turns out just because I saw the guys in Cirque du Soleil do it does not mean I can do it.

And I love Wikipedia for the editing: "The photo above shows an almost-ripe Chandler (though it would still be good eating)." Hooo boy, that pomelo sure would be some good eats!

No thanks. I prefer getting my daily citrus intake in the form of Minute Maid OJ.:p
