Have you ever had Port?

I bought a bottle for the 1st time the other day and tried it last night.

It was a Noval Ruby Porto. Had a nice taste...a touch of fruit and seemed like a somewhat woody taste, too. But, wow, it was a lot stronger tasting than I was expecting.


Looking for recommendations.

I saw some $100 bottles of 20 year-old port but I thought....nah...I'll try a $10 bottle first.

It's strong because it's supposed to be at room temperature, so more of the flavor hits your tongue. I'm big on wines, but not a big port fan. It's popular in Italy though; lots of Italians like it with thier pasta dishes.

Yup, the Cockburn's I picked up was about $10. Easily my favorite port. I believe I've had Noval as well. It is pretty sweet though, so I can only have it every few months.

Agreed. Inexpensive bottles of port can actually be quite good.

Much like wine, better to start small while building a palate.

I had some 40 YO bottle of port at a wine loving friends place. It had so much sediment in it that he had to strain it out. It was way too sweet for my liking. I could only take small sips at a time.

That's how this Ruby Porto was.

I sampled 5 different flavors when I was in Portugal 1-1.5 months ago. I liked a couple of them - I forget the names - a sweet one, and a coffee flavored one.

You are only SUPPOSED to sip port.

AFAIK, it's more served as an after-dinner or 'desert' drink, it's not something you'd eat food with.
