have you ever had good company training?

most of the places I have worked for have poor training, ie, videos. have you ever had good company training and why was it good?

i loved my company training when i got hired.
three weeks of full time pay for about 4 or 5 hours of actual work each day.
and they flew us down to Toronto to see their operations there for just an afternoon.

If by good training, you mean "Here's a manual, read it for 2 days and get on the phones" then yes, my training was OUTSTANDING!

Nope. Though I just started some .NET training and it seems decent. Nothing specific to the company though.

My cashier training was alright - it got the job done. A large part of it consisted of interactive software. The most pointless part was when we went on "produce walks", where we walked around the produce area and our trainer went through all the fruit and vegetable names and their respective PLU codes. I don't think I learned a single code during those walks.

how did you give good training? I'm trying to figure out what a good training program would be. videos and "read the manual" doesn't work for me 😛

Good training starts with knowledgable trainers. It also involves different methods of training such as audio/video, handouts, e-learning. Stimulus for the ears and eyes. Most importantly is the hands on.

Yea My company has good training, I did 8 days school/outside training. 3 weeks on the job training. 8 more days of classroom training and rules. and then 4-5+ more months of On the job traiing, total training time is 7 months aprox.

I've only had training at one company. It was well intended but poor.

I actually got one full month of training at Best Buy to do frontline retail work. :Q

A previous job of mine was staffing a help desk for the companies flagship product. My company brought in customer service and problem resolution consultants to help us work the angles on angry callers and how to defuse tense situations.

It was an invaluable asset to the job and for future jobs. The company prided themselves on their customer support and call resolution skills. They put a lot of money into it making sure their employees had the training to meet those goals.

I'd like to think I'm a good trainer but most of the time I've been on the receiving end, it hasn't been all that good.

When I worked for CTG they put me through 5 weeks of training before I started. Put me up in a hotel a block from their training facilities in Buffalo NY. Quality stuff.

Here's what works for me:
1. Personal training (one-on-one or a very small group)
2. Hands-on
3. Time to absorb it

How about you? What would you like to see in a training program?
