Heh, I had a phone interview on Friday that I thought was "meh" to terrible. I blanked on one question (give 3 examples, and I came up with 2), had to admit to not having experience in one area (honestly, I don't really have experience with this), and had a few other smaller issues. I felt really bad about it afterward, but the supervisor called this morning and they're flying me up there in a couple weeks for an all day interview :)

Anyone else have a crap interview and unexpectedly get to the next interview stage or get the job?

Yes. My current job actually. I worked here already already in a different position, and did a phone interview what is now my current job. I thought I totally bombed it, but it turned out they really liked me.

Hopefully it works out the same for you!

Keep in mind that interviewers don't always expect you to be able to answer every question, and it's even more telling how you react to questions you can't answer. I'm much happier interviewing someone who's willing to admit they don't know something than someone who tries to bullshit me (which is probably going to fail utterly since I'm normally asking questions about my area of expertise).

I might be worried that the company is that desperate :p

I've never had the situation myself, though the opposite has happened several times (typically when my great interview can't hold a candle to the fact that my competition is BFF's with a VP)

I went through a "situational panel interview" a couple of years ago. The questions were based on "customer service" scenarios, and I've never worked retail or any other direct customer service type job...so I had a helluva time answering some of the scenario questions...and thought I completely blew the interview.

I was surprised when they called me and offered me the job. I later met the lady who headed the panel and was told that mine was the best interview they'd done all year.

The big fat guy was interviewing me once, he was sweating like crazy, kept grabbing his chest like his was gonna die. After 10 mins, he cut the interview short and called 911.

Yep...and it led to me making a salary in the top 1% in the US. I am now $53,000 short on my taxes....

Congrats! That's encouraging - since they're putting out money you're probably a serious contender for the job. :)

I interviewed for a help desk position and was fairly sure nobody in their right mind would hire me to work IT in any capacity because I tanked almost every question. I got a job offer the next day - when I asked WHY they told me because knowing the answers wasn't as important as knowing you DON'T know an answer but know how to find it and can get it across to the customer in a usable format.

I didn't take the job, but it was really interesting to get a better understanding of what interviewers are looking for.

Yep, actually got the job...I still work there but am now in a different position. Just felt it was one of the strangest interviews and really provided them nothing that was too relevant to the position, but somehow got the job...

Years ago, when my GF interviewed for a city council position in her home town (Director of Education) , she basically disagreed with the Mayor on every single point. She also rejected his view on education issues as being completely wrong, backwards, etc.

He hired her the next day.
