A couple of Sundays ago I found my daughter, while doing some late night homework, had moved the SBLive drop down menu bar and I could not get it to move back to the top of the screen. To make matters worse, the menu was missing the mixer command, and I couldn't find the executable for it anywhere (I could find the surround mixer .exe, but not the mixer .exe).
So, I blithely went ahead and uninstalled the SBLive install. That resulted in a BSOD everytime Win98 hit the system for a sound. I uninstalled the SB drivers, and same thing. I deleted the SBLive card from Device Mgr., still BSOD's.
It was now time to stop, and assess the situation. I first backed up everything (data, MP3, wallpaper, sounds, etc.) I could think of. FYI I had just backed up everything a few days ago (I'm actually one that does this on a regular basis, to CD-RW). After I backed up I went to work reinstalling the drivers and the Live software, and continually received a BSOD referencing the emu10k1.vxd file.
I finally decided to give up, and call Creative on Monday. A few hours later I figured I'd give it one more shot, and the result was a successful install of both the drivers and the Live software. Since then the system's run fine. Oh, after that episode, I decided to waste seven CD-R's and make a full recovery backup w/ the HP software that came w/ my CD-RW drive.
