Have you ever experienced a "black out" when you were drunk?

My friend Josh suffered from "black outs" after drinking in college... he'd go out, drink heavily, and not be able to remember what happened the next day. More than once, he'd call me at some obscene hour of the night, saying he was in some strange girl's bed and could I please pick him up. I never understood the phenomenon and never drank enough to experience it myself... has anyone here ever had a "black out" when you were drunk? Did you remember anything at all? I'm not sure if it's real, or just an excuse to do dumb things while intoxicated. *sigh*

EDIT (more questions): For those of you who have experienced "black outs"... so you honestly don't remember a thing? There are "gaps" in memory from the night before? Can you tell when you're beginning to black out, or does it just happen all of a sudden? Do you think someone can or should be held responsible for what they do during a "blackout"?

EDIT #2: Is it possible for a guy to get an erection/have sex during a blackout? I thought excessive amounts of alcohol make it harder for a male to "get it up", and didn't really understand how Josh could have sex and not remember it while blacked out. I wish I knew more about/better understood the medical reasons behind it...

Yes I have experienced that before and after I did I vowed never to drink to that point again. It is not a good feeling at all to not know what happened and how you got where you did.

Yes, it is very real. It has happened to me a few times, however I better know my limits now. A friend of mine gets it bad, sometimes he can't even remember what bar we went to or how he got home etc. I think it's a sign of alcohol poisioning

Once. It was many years ago and I have no idea how I got home but apparently I at least had the sense to call a friend for a ride at 1:00 in the morning. Good thing too, I had the keys to my Mustang GT in my pocket.

It is scary to think about it after that there are periods of time of which you have no memory.

I've done it twice. It's really not a very good idea to drink that much and I shan't be doing it ever again. Last time was in 1995.

It only happened to me once. There is about a 2 hour period of one night that is just gone, I remember nothing. There's been a few other times when bits and pieces were missing but not the whole thing like that.

Never drank so much that I've blacked out. (Including over a 1/3 bottle of tequila one night) Yea that doesn't sound like much but that was my first drinking party ever.

I know some people who do it quite a bit. I myself have had near black-outs I guess; I remember a lot of a night but forget some things..gets fuzzy.

But yea, a lot of people use them as excuses to do things imo. Though it does happen.

A few times. I vaguely remembered some things, but wrongly.
Once I also told a girl I liked her, which ended up being a good thing :)
Wouldn't have said anything if I hadn't been drunk because we were friends.

I thought I'd said it to a mutual friend in a totally different place though, so I was confused.

Some people are more or less susceptible to this - it is not a linear function of how much you have to drink. Unfortunately I have had it happen a few times, and it isn't a good feeling.

Happens

Wake up not remembering anything or bits. Usually when it happens to me I can remember up to a certain point of time then everything else is blank.

Damn. So you honestly don't remember a thing... there are "gaps" in memory from the night before? Can you tell when you're beginning to black out, or does it just happen all of a sudden? Do you think someone can or should be held responsible for what they do during a "blackout"?

It's happened to me before... It's really bizarre because you really have NO CLUE how you acted or what you were doing. Fortunately my friends told me that I acted like I usually do and didn't do anything stupid.

Really don't know it until the next day or when you realize you don't remember what you did, how you got somewhere, etc.

Not drink, but i did Valiums... i took 4, and didn't 'feel' anything for about 30 mins, so took a couple more. That's all i remember of the night, except some flashes. This was in prison too, and my friends told me i was so fvcked up, that i was hitting the emergency button in my cell (each cell had an emergency button) so the guards would come, and my friends would had to tell them that it was an accident. Another guy told me i told him he smelled good lol... i remember that part. I was sitting at a table eating and he came by after a shower, and for some reason i said that.

Anyways, after being told how stupid i was, i never did Vs again.

There are gaps. For my birthday this year i didn't even know we went to another bar for last call. I have no recollection of it at all. My roommate had to convince me we did that. It just happens...you seem to remember stuff when you are doing it, then don't know the next day.

as for responsibility, that is up to the person that is judging and the act that they did. They did the drinking and didn't know their limits, so i'd say more often than not they are responsible.

It happened to me all of a sudden. I took the Vs in the card shop (we -the chinese- ran a card shop that sold greeting cards to other inmates)... and that's pretty much all i remember... i don't remember going back to my cell block, which requires going throw 2 gates that were guarded (card shop was in the gym area... so there's a guarded gate to enter/leave the gym, and a guarded gate to enter the cell block). I do remember flashback memories though... and other memories which i think i fabricated after people told me what i did that night. For example, people told me i was hitting the emergency button in my cell, and i absolutely did not remember that at the time... but over the years, i've come to picture myself actually doing that.

A few times. It's really rather pointless, as I have to consume 2-3x as much as what I drink to feel 'nice' (which is quite a bit to begin with) and generally end up feeling like complete and utter sh*t the next day. The last time it happened was actually only a month or two back, after a certain point that night my memory just draws a blank. I couldn't keep any food or drink, even water, down for the next 24 hours and felt sick for a few days on top of that.

Gaps or you just remember up to a point and then you wake up the next morning and people tell you what you did. It is very scary but if you are that drunk you are going to be very hung over the next morning. I was. I've never been that drunk before or since. No thank you.

I was drinking beer and whiskey. Finished off the better part of a bottle of Jim Beam between two people. I think I still have the remainder of that bottle in my cupboard at home and this was over 10 years ago.

Edit - I do not remember getting to the point of blacking out. I was still conscious and doing things (we kind of trashed the place we were partying at-nothing permanent, just made a big mess) but I have no memory of it. I had a nice scrape on my hand but don't know how I got it.
