I've never done it on the freeway, but there was this side road that led to the main road out of the small town where my parents live. On a week morning, traffic always gets backed up in the left turn lane at the intersection of the main road and the side road, blocking most of the traffic that wants to go straight or make a right.

One morning several years back, I tried to slip up the shoulder and go straight. Immediately got owned by a cop who pulled up behind me, got on the PA and told me to stop the car. I was just one out of about 10 people who got nailed at once, since apparently the cops ran a little sting op to nail people for slipping up the shoulder that morning. Got slapped with a $100 ticket, went to traffic school online and got it dismissed. Haven't done that since.

The people who go flying up the shoulder at 50+ MPH next to stopped traffic or to merge on the freeway are serious tools, IMHO. Way to cause an accident.

I have often dreamed of going vigilante on the interstate. With either a roof mounted chain gun or rocket launcher. I have also considered taking some sort of large, tracked construction vehicle and just driving. Ignoring all laws.

The most ridiculous thing I have done to beat the traffic is "detour" through a shopping mall, dodging carts, pedestrians and speed bumps to shave 5 minutes off of my time.

When my car was in the shop, I would be either driving a Geo Tracker (now totaled, thanks to yours truly) or a Nissan Xterra on one occaison... I've been thru those situations, and I don't even think twice about pulling right off the road and passing people.... oh yeah, I found out that the xterra in 4WD mode will crawl over most anything within a 2 foot height in its path
