Have You Ever Eaten A Bug Intentionally?

I guess it's pretty popular in Asian and Mexican cultures, but I've never tried it myself.

I was surprised how many vitamins and minerals are in your average bug compared to your average hamburger:

Food Item Protein (g) Fat (g) Carbohydrate Calcium (mg) Iron (mg)

Grasshopper 20.6 3.3 3.9 75.8 9.5

Ground Beef 27.4 N/A N/A N/A 3.5

i've had grasshoppers, crickets, and mealworms. not that bad, but not very interesting when the novelty wears off.

hehe i'm asian so i guess this is normal for me? 🙂
i had fried ants once. tasted like fried rice but crunchier..
mmm...

dopcombo - I hope that you don't think I mean all Asians and Mexicans eat bugs. I have seen on travel shows how they are considered delicacies by some in these countries and can be purchased in open-air markets, restaurants, stores, etc. This is what I meant by saying they were popular with Asians and Mexicans. Simply because they are available in those venues makes them a heck of a lot more popular than anything I've seen in the US!

cablegod,

It is not like they are the big ants. You would need about 30 of them at once to actually notice.

NO....
not technically anyway. Ever since i was little though i have hated spiders. So.. what do i do..
whenever i eat berries adn there is a small spider on them i eat the spider as well. The way i see it if i hadn't checked the berry before eating it i wouldn't have noticed teh spider and eaten it anyways...
Spiders don't taste all that great though 🙁

Once while riding a motorcycle, I yawned and a bug went into my mouth. I tried for a few minutes to spit it out, but going 70 MPH, it's a bit difficult to spit! I decided to just swallow it, which I did. Then I began to wonder, what will happen since I didn't chew the bug (to kill it) first. Is it still inside of me? Perhaps grown to twilight zone perportion, with lots of little babies running around my small intestines? Gives a whole new meaning to "Muscle Twitch" or "Bug Twitch".

Spent 2 years in the Philippines as a Peace Corps Volunteer; ate ant eggs, beetles, grasshoppers, along with lots of other stuff. Squid, shark, snakes, monkies, turtles, dog, lizard. I was pretty far into the mountains and not alot of Americans made it there so I usually got the best parts whenever at celebrations: dog brains and fish eyes.

i made $5 from classmates in 1997 in chemistry class for eating a bug actually it was a bee not bad, little crunchy, try washing it down with something nice.. grape juice if i might add works exceptionally well!
