Have you ever contemplated suicide?

My wife's friend is what I would call an emotionally fragile person. She has major trust issues, etc. A few nights ago she called my wife late at night saying that her latest relationship just ended and she wanted to go drive off a bridge. It's difficult to know how serious she is, but it's not the first time she's said things like this. My wife drove 2 1/2 hours to her apt. and spent the night. It got me thinking, how does someone get to a place when they would rather die than just end a relationship? Or just live on their own? Have you ever considered suicide?

I haven't, but my sister-in-law has attemped suicide once. I think it happens when you get to a place where you feel like there is no escape and no potential resolution. Also consider that most people that contemplate or attempt suicide are probably not thinking rationally and are in such despair that they can't see beyond their predicament.

Unfortunately I suffer with Bipolar disorder type II and as a result feelings like this are just a part of life for me. If she is prone to thoughts like that, there's every chance she also has an underlying condition, it would be worth trying to talk to her about it to see if she could meet with a psychiatrist as there is a lot of help out there for people who look for it, in the UK at least there is. Medication, therapy and believe me it can help so much.

I've contemplated suiciding other people, but never myself. Life's just too good, even on the bad days.

With most women suicide is a conversational tactic to get attention.

From what I understand she sees a therapist regularly.

Therapy is great, but having a better understanding of the medical side will be very helpful, unless she has a therapist with a medical degree of some sort I would recommend she looks into a psychiatry appointment, They may be able to offer her medication that could really, help. I'm on medication and I can tell you it makes a huge difference to my depression.

Suicide is Painless.

Nope, I'm not a "Life sucks, I'ma kill myself" kind of guy.

Every time you think things are so bad that you just want to end it all...take a look around. Some other motherfucker has it 10 times worse...yet still manages to get up and face life every day.

My brother I always says "I'm a glass half full kind of guy, but the glass is half full of something that makes me sick"

I think any competent therapist would realize when there is a need for medical intervention.

Being alive is a better way for me to get revenge on the world than the alternative.

Nope - life is too awesome. I have a beer once in a blue moon [after a hockey game in the locker room], I don't smoke, nor do drugs [I can't stand not being in control of my own actions].

I have absolutely no idea what it would take for me to consider suicide...

Yes, but not in a fit of depression or anything. Mostly because I'm not really afraid of death, and I'm really anxious to see what happens after. No, I'm not really afraid of that either.

Possibly but some (alot) of therapists don't believe in the medical side of things, particularly therapists that call them selves councilors some tend to believe that therapy alone is enough.

I have a real difficult time believing that you ever seriously considered it.

Maybe it is just a code to get your wife to be able to spend the night with her.

I've contemplated other people killing themselves...does that count?

I just had to post again in that stupid JEDIyoda thread, so I think I have to revise my answer...
