Have you ever carpooled with a total stranger?

Can you describe your experiences? I might have to carpool with two people that I don't know at all to get to a friend's birthday party. I wonder if it's a good idea.

You'll be fine assuming they're good friends of your friend. This isn't some daily carpool to work with complete strangers deal.

yes, many times.

I generally take a bus (it's a park & ride line) here in Houston. Many commuters wanting to take the HOV lane will pick up people standing in line for the bus - both in the morning and the evening. Normally, I only jump in a car in the evening because it can take 20 minutes for a bus to come by. If I need to get to work quickly in the morning I may hop in a car that needs riders. I don't worry about it because of the park & ride nature of the line almost everyone is a working professional. Most killers aren't going to be driving Lexus', Expeditions or other expensive vehicles. The Houston Chronicle did a story on the phenomenon about a year ago. They dubbed the riders "Slugs", forgot what they called the drivers.

When I was working in downtown DC I would do what is known as "slugging" here. You park in a commuter lot, stand in a line, and wait for total strangers to pick you up. Benefit to them = using the HOV lanes, benefit for me quick free ride to work. There are known spots to gather in DC for the return trip home.

When I was using the so called wonderful mass transit system here my commuting times were anywhere from 1:30 minutes to 1:50 minutes each way door to door. Slugging cut that down to 50 minutes to 1:10 minutes door to door. The sole cost to me was my gas to get to the commuter parking from my house.

If you have any faith in your friend's judgment, you can probably assume that he has friends that are safe to spend some time driving with. If you are having doubts about these people, you are, at a deeper level, not too trusting of your friend.

how could it go wrong?

they're people... you'll be sharing a car with them.

worst case scenario, they leave without telling you or you decide to stay later than them. in both situations, you either take a taxi home or get a ride from someone else. no big deal.

OOOhh, I know this one. Always accept rides with strangers, its perfectly safe. At least I think that's what my parents said. Anyways, I've met a couple of strangers who seemed completely harmless, so I doubt that any harm will come of this. Just remember to wear a chastity belt to protect yourself from nonconsensual invasions.
