I made beer once and it was awful....be honest people...have you ever brewed beer or wine that was any good? If so, what's your secret?

A good friend of mine brewed a batch that was really quite good his first try but after that they got progressively worse. I don't think he cleaned the container he fermented (or whatever the process is) the beer in well enough-he cleaned it well just not well enough. Stainless steel is the best for making beer but it is expensive for the home brewer unless you're really into it. He was using plastic.

Mrs. Bernse and I make a few batches of wine a year. We haven't had one turn out badly for a few years now.

I've been brewing beer for maybe 13 years, and fruit wine for maybe 5. Only ever had one batch of each turn out nasty.

I've been brewing for 10+ years now. I brew beer from grain. Actually only had one batch turn out "bad" but I expected it since I used scraps from other batches. I also make wine a few times a year. Never had a bad batch and at $50 for 5 Gal of wine you can't go wrong. Actually I haven't made a batch of either and I have a wine kit in the basement (juice and yeast). I think tomorrow is the day to start the next batch of wine. Will be perfect for Christmas!

DON'T USE THAT MR. BEER THING. Go get a bud if you are thinking of that!

Egads, fifty bucks for 5 gallons of wine! I make it for the cost of sugar and yeast (maybe five bucks). Just use fruit that's in season and free from friends/relatives/your garden.

Yes I have. Keeping EVERYTHING clean is the most important part.

I have had good and bad batches just like everyone else.
