Have you ever been involved with or affected by a cult?

[edit]I am asking about organizations that are typically regarded as "cults" rather than as "religions". For instance, a newspaper would not write about Hinduism, Islam, or Christianity as a cult, but they would write about Heaven's Gate as a cult.

Had a bunch of cult-freaks try to talk me into it on a street, but never even stopped to take a look at their crap.
No one can take my money away from me!

The Haleys Comet Doomsday cult made me miss my afternoon cartoons when they committed mass suicide.

The Jim Jones church building was in the town over from mine. It's now an Assembly of God church. My sis and I used to babysit there on Wednesday mornings.

My wife's parents were cult members for a number of years... She actually lived in a 'teaching center' til she was 5. Her Dad eventually rebelled.. as far as I know it was very easy for them to leave, but a casual search shows what appear to be some disturbing allegations. My wife has nothing bad to say about them though.

There's a cult down the street from my mom. They meet every week. I think they're Christians.

The 'religion' I grew up in would proclaim from the rooftops that they aren't a cult.

OTOH, they meet every single criteria for it, so....I'd say, yeah, I was raised in a cult. (As to the points I'm referring to, see the "How they do this" section, the "Some abuses..." section and the "Results of..." section. Every one of those points in each section was true of this 'worldwide religion')
