Have you ever been in a life threatening situation involving guns, knives, etc..?

After reading the thread about the movie shooting it made me think about some run ins I've had with idiots and weapons.

When I was in high school I got robbed at gun point for my jacket, watch and headphones.

In another part of the city (Chicago) I was riding home on the bus with my younger brother and witnessed a fight breakout between 2 men. The smaller of the 2 guys pulled out what I think was a .45 (not much of a gun expert) it was like a mini cannon. After waving it around in the other guys face for a minute, he jumped off the bus.

The scariest encounter with guns I had was when I was playing basketball at a park and I heard an argument breakout, about 7 guys (thugs) were ganged up on 2 other guys. The 2 guys ran off and about 2-3 minutes later they came flying up the street in a station wagon packed with about 6-8 guys and it seemed like everyone except the driver was hanging out the windows shooting at the initial 7 guys in the park. This was in broad daylight with kids, families and people just out playing sports and jogging.

Any of you guy ever been in life threatening situations?

Not really. I had a guy threaten to get a gun once, but I never saw anything. Once I saw some skinheads harassing a couple queers. I hung out nearby in case things got out of hand, but they quit fairly quickly. Cops had them against a wall a half hour later, with a pile of knives next to them.

While in the army, a female staff sergeant at my duty post in Korea swung around at the range, and had everyone drop to the ground instantly like you'd see in just about any military movie. The lieutenant at the range grabbed her arm and pointed the M16 in the air and chewed her out. Not exactly life threatening, but it could of been.

On Easter Sunday when I was a kid (16), a bunch of us were skateboarding down in the deserted shopping district. A woman was banging on the door of Value City across the street - no cars in any parking lots, no lights, it was obvious it was closed. So, being young and having a smart mouth, we taunted her. She got in her car, drove over to the parking lot we were in, and proceeded to try and run us down. Totally unexpected, and she ended up running over the foot of a friend of mine.

Ive been at a party where someone pulled a knife and started waiving it around. He wasn't particularly pointing it at me, but it was somewhat scary. If I knew as much about knives then as I do now, I would have been more scared.

I saw a knife training video where an expert used a cheap pocket knife to completely wreck a side of beef in about 10 seconds.
That was a little unnerving.

Lived in Detroit in the mid-late 90's. felt no need then

Now in Denver, was 100 feet away from that officer shot at City park Jazz 3 weeks ago. Still felt no need for a gun. My car hood was tagged by the rollin crips on Wednesday evening who is in a gang war involving the shooter. Still feel no need

I live 3 houses down from 17th ave in Denver, the shooter in yesterdays killing was also living on 17th to the east of me.. again I feel no need

I don't mind guns personally, I mind gun nuts like Ted Stoogent though and the people who think their gun rights are being threatened in any way cause it seems to just make them more hardcore and scary.

Yes. Axe murderer just murdered his girlfriend and tried to truck jack me.
Didn't know the details at the time, just that something was wrong.

Two times. My neighbors threatened with a knife.
A robber man (possible junkie) once pulled a knife on me when i was 12.
I did step in between a few fights between people who were about to pull knifes on each other. But there was no immediate danger.
Pistols i have held, loaded and all. But not used nor did i ever get shot at.

Well not guns or knifes but I've had nuclear weapons pointed at me for the last 54 years and I haven’t flinched once!

In my late teens to mid 20's, I got involved in a lot of drama. I have been shot at but never hit. I have had clubs with nails used on me. I have had knives pulled on me and lucky survived with just superficial wounds.

I was shot almost through the hand, but that was friendly fire and only a high powered air rifle. They had to pin me down to pull the pellet out. Looking back it would have been better to have just sliced the skin on the back of my hand around it to get it out on that side as it was fully visible.

I don't really think Nugent is a 'gun nut', he is very concerned in how much our guns are becoming limited.

I am willing to bet if you ever ended up in a situation where you were hospitalized over it and a handgun could have prevented it, you'd change your tune.

Getting victimized is rare and makes it easy for everyone to think they'd never need a weapon.

When I was younger I was an excellent fighter, I trained in many sports, martial arts, lifted weights, etc. Much of my martial arts training was what became MMA today. Learning to disarm and avoid being shot were big parts of that training. Now that I am older I am considering a handgun. I tend to still get involved in altercations other's are in and have been very very lucky.

One of the best 'anti gun' stories was a guy I knew in the late 80's. This was right after the 1986 ban where a lot of people were on that side. He insisted he'd never own a gun and was political in wanting to get guns banned. He was a very small and frail sort of guy, minded his own business and was a hard worker.

He got held up leaving an ATM once. Didn't feel the need to get a gun, they took less than $100 from him and just ran away; the bank refunded his money so his belief was he was made whole and no one needed to be hurt.. Then it happened again and not only did they rob his withdrawl but they gave him a 'smiley' (bashed his teeth out on a curb) and stole his car. He woke up a week later in the hospital with some brain damage (I think, he may have lost his sense of smell or partial eyesight, I can't remember). I do remember he couldn't remember if it was the same guys that time...he lost all memory of that day.

He turned into a total gun nut after that, but still thought others shouldn't own guns. He was so hypocritical, it used to drive me nuts. As luck would have it one of the same dudes that put him into a coma tried to re-rob him at that same ATM several months later. He unloaded into the guy's chest at point blank (he was literally pulling him out of his car at the time), killing him supposedly instantly. Supposedly as he was getting pulled out of the car the dude told him "you ain't living this time" which re-triggered his memories of that other attack. He never remembered actually pulling out his gun and aiming it. It was just this sound in his head and the guy falling down.

He did a complete 180 and began defending gun rights majorly.

No and I pray it never does happen.

Same.

Though it's rare, in the back of my mind I know I have no way to defend myself in these situations. Canadians are anti-gun to the point of obsession. They're not illegal here but the government treats them like they're weapons grade plutonium. For Canadians, defense against crime is the monopoly of the police. People are actively deterred from self defense, especially if using a firearm. But our rates of violent crime are pretty low. Though maybe that's more a cultural and socio-economic thing. The Swiss all have guns, are trained in their use, and gun crime rates are far lower than blades weapons, and crime in general is low. Having a self defense weapon is a great leveler against people with malicious intent. Canadians aren't going to change their minds on the subject anytime soon though.

Yes. I have drawn down on at least two felony traffic stops. I've shot and been shot with my fair share of Simunitions during training exercises. I've conducted live "buddy fire" exercises with live ammo where we took turns laying down supressive fire and bounding forward towards targets. I have qualified on the M9,M4, M16A1, M16A2, M2, M60, M240B, M249, and Mk19.

I was a kid (17-ish) hanging out at a Denny's at like 3 in the morning when two jacked up dudes (drunk and prob coked up) started verbally harassing (in a sexual way) a young girl seated in a party next to us from their booth. When someone confronted them, one brandished a piece in a shoulder harness. He never drew it, but he threatened to shoot us all before running out of there.

I had this grade 7 guy that wanted to beat me up. I laughed at him and walked away, I was in grade 12. That's the closest that I've been to such situation. Hey, he totally could have had a knife on him and run at me from behind and stab me. 😛

Guns, no, they're illegal here, and you can't buy them anywhere. There was once a rumor that there was someone with a gun in school, they locked down the whole building had like half the police dept and K9 unit and whole shebang. Was a pretty big ordeal. Never found a gun but they had to be safe.

you can get guns in canada bro.

Same. Makes for some good stories, but they are not times I want to relive.

I've had a gun pointed at my face. Not fun, but I've certainly never had to go back in time so I don't feel it was the dangerous situation that the flux capacitor put Marty into.
