Have you ever been in a car accident?

With another car, object, or whatever, no matter how minor? (excepting speed bumps and sidewalks (unless you hit the curb going fast, but parallel parking doesn't count :))).

I feel so dumb, I just got my license two weeks ago and I already hit another car. What's worse is that it's almost the exact same type of scenario that happened to a friend of mine last summer.

Last summer, I was in the car with two other friends and his girlfriend. The driver was distracted by his GF and all of a sudden a green sunfire in front of us slammed on the brakes. By the time my friend noticed he was only able to slow the car to 20km/h (12mph) and we hit it with a loud bang. Luckily there was no damage to either car and nobody contacted insurance (thankfully for my friend) but I loved to tease my friend about that incident.

Now, yesterday I was on the same street and behing a green sunfire (just like my friend). I was going rather slowly and looked away from the road for like 2 seconds when I saw brake lights go on and put my brakes on but I didn't brake enough and I bumped into the car in front of me. I was going a lot slower (less than 5km/h or 3mph) but they got out of the car and looked pissed off. They just looked at their bumper and then got back in the car and left when the light turned green. They turned left and I got stuck at the intersection (I was staying a good distance off their bumper). When it turned green again I just went straight. I later parked the car and checked it out.. didn't seem to be a scratch, and the bumper still felt firm. Guess my 14 year old bumper still works ;)

It pisses me off cause it was my fault, and not only that but it was almost exactly like the situation that I teased my friend about.

You're fine. Most cars have 5MPH bumpers. Those shiny plastic covers just hide them. All impacts are usually loud but at those slow speed the chances of mecahnical damage are pretty low. Sure it looks bad cosmetically but call this a cheap lesson on staying alert while behind the wheel. Sure it is technically your fault but nothing came about the incident so don't sweat it.

I've been in enough to seriously wonder WTF my problem was:

- Totalled my first car when I rear-ended a Taurus in the fog/rain, couldn't tell she had stopped until it was too late
- Slid off the road in the rain in my next car, didn't see the corner coming, though I was going slower than I was
- Ran into a van when the dumbass driver pulled out in front of me, not my fault, their insurance covered 100% of the damage to my vehicle
- Ran off the road & into a large stump when a car came over the top of a blind hill 1/2 way into my lane, probably wasn't as close as I thought he was, see below
- Ran into two elk, totalling my Accord

I haven't owned a car since, & that was over a year ago.

I found out a few months ago though that my vision has gotten drastically worse over the last 1-2 years, to the point where I was not legal to drive. I didn't realize it, but my vision was TERRIBLE. I have contacts now, & can see well enough that I would be legal if I only had one eye (ie both are 20/40 or better). Hopefully this well take care of my driving record, for quite a while there I had no clue why I was such a seemingly bad driver. Fact was I couldn't see a damn thing.

Yes....

I hit a car in a parking lot once  I was going like <1 mph though, no damage, so I just left.

Hit a car when I was in reverse once... I had gotten too far out into an intersection. This was also at a very very low speed. We pulled over and he was all pissed, but there was no damage, so we just went our separate ways.

Hit some SUV while trying to make a tight parking spot. Again... very very low speeds, no damage.

The only hit I've ever been in that caused any damage was in my friend's car. He made an illegal left and we got slammed by an SUV (we are in an early 90's japanese car mind you). The side was completely smashed in and the car had to be junked. Nobody got hurt though. The SUV was speeding and the guy was on his cell phone (not paying attention) but he got off scot-free because my friend made an illegal left.

I have been in 3 accidents, all major. Thankfully, no one was ever killed, but I did have some doosies I was involved in where multiple people went to the hospital for broken bones and stuff.

Just count yourself lucky, don't ever look away from the road, and don't tell your buddy :)

Only one wreck that was my fault. I was doing 30MPH on the interstate in heavy rain. I was about to pull off but I couldn't get over. The road was flooded up ahead and I hydroplaned and tapped the wall. Very minor damage to my car and the wall. Just had to have a new front fascia.

When I first got my license, I freakin car just backed up into me. It was trying to make a left turn but it was very unsure, and I was behiind it for probably at least 30 seconds. But for some idiotic reason it stopped haflway in making a left turn (thinking it couldn't make it I assume... idiotic... NEVER stop halfway), so then it started proceeding to back up and just hit me. And then it sped off! :| Well it only got the bottom in which it would be impossible to see, so we let em go.

Second time, I was in a parking lot at high school. Car back up destroying the side door. Idiot, and then claimed it was BOTH our faults after not responding for a long time.

Third time, car just bumped into me during really heavy rain. WTF. It was just a paint scratch on a POS car that already had lots of paint scratches and it was raining really hard and the person was sorry, so I let em go.

Last time, feel asleep at the wheel. Totalled my car and another persons. It's a pretty fsckin scary thing knowing you almost took a life.

Though minor, you've had 3 accidents in how many years of driving?

I have had one in 40+ years.

Yup..Stop signs. I get hit at em. People rear end me when I stop. Last time it happened the goof ran the stop and rear ended me after I completed my stop and continued on thru the intersection....why??

Yep. I drive race cars, so I've been in my share of collisions. My most recent was a race a few weeks ago. I was running 3rd, and the 4th place guy hits me from behind getting into a corner, spinning me. As I'm spinning a car from further back clips me. That one rung my bell pretty good. Good thing for all the safety equipment. :)

I have totalled 4 cars. I have been in about 10 accidents and I know I have used to have issues with driving and road rage. I crashed my 71 Nova. I got hit head on in my 72 Chevelle. I totalled a Chevy Maliby. I was in 2 accidents in that Malibu one of them on my way to my graduation from High School. I totalled a Ford Tempo. I got rear ended in my Nissan Truck. I crashed a parts truck at work.
I am doing better now but I have had as many as 11 points and I was a probationary driver until I was 26. So yep I have been in a collision.

I was injured in only 2 of these accidents. In the Chevelle I had a compund fracture of my left wrist
and in the tempo I broke my shoulder from the seat belt.

I was coming down from a relationship in '74. Got drunk and totaled a car. Went off a cliff! No one hurt....

Other than that I've no at fault accident minor or serious. Had a license since '72.

I have 1,250,000 miles of safe driving in a semi-truck. I'm proud of that in case you didn't notice...:)

Yup,

Hit another car with the company car 3 weeks after being hired. This was back in 1989.
Since then nothing what so ever.

No, I haven't. I've been driving (legally) for 39 years and I have never been involved in an accident or a fender bender. I have never run into anybody else and I have never allowed anyone to run into me. Getting involved in an automobile accident is 90% poor driving and 10% bad luck.

The stats that some of you are admitting to only makes me believe that the driving age should be raised to 21.

Well, my friend that hit the sunfire...

His first accident was with a rental car when he was taking his driver's test. He pulled out of a parallel parking space on a major street to get hit by a Cherokee going about 80km/h (or 50mph), according to him. Anyways he got banned from that SAAQ (our version of your DMV) center for a year.

He got his license a couple of retests later (a couple of months), and then knocked his back bumper off when he hit someone else in a parking lot while backing up. After that was the sunfire incident which I already mentioned :)

He also put his car into a ditch while avoiding a dog, and lately he nearly went off a cliff on a two-lane country road when supposedly someone went across the yellow line and forced him off the road. I'm still amazed his car doesn't have a scratch from that, it was on it's side in a ditch! Not a scratch!
