Have you ever actually hacked into anything? Know anyone who has?

Does wirelessly connecting to a Linksys router and entering the password "admin", turning off DHCP, then logging out count?

Neither of these probably count as hacking, but they were fun anyway:

Some users I deal with regularly had a non-networked pc, and they forgot all their passwords. Using info & programs I found on the net, I was able to break their local admid password and restore access to them.

Our security admin challenged me to test our network/database security. Within half an hour (with the aid of a packet sniffer I had downloaded) I was able to tell him one of our most important passwords (it was being passed over the network unencrypted).

i got in a lot of trouble for taking over my high school's network my junior year

they threatened me with a bunch of computer related felonies, actually made me go down to the police station and stuff...the backwoods hillbilly cops didn't even really know what was going on i don't think

i got banned from the computers for the rest of the time i was there

they said the only reason they didn't press charges on me was because i could have changed grades and attendance records and i didn't..i just wanted to play around

EDIT: oh yeah, i also got 200 hours of detention and everlasting fame as a "733t hacker" in the little town of pauls valley...5 years later and everyone still remembers it

I saw someone attempt to hax0r a roommate at GA Tech. But this guy was a CS major and knew how to "hack back" and so he did. I watched him as he got to the C:\ prompt of the intruder's machine and managed to delete the guy's registry.

Another GT incident, which is entirely off the grapevine: there was a guy in one of the East campus dorms (don't remember which) a few years ago. He wanted higher download speeds, so he installed bots on several other computers in that dorm. He was caught, dunno what they did to him.

Back then, Resnet security policies weren't that secure; but now you can't connect to the internet from your dorm room unless your computer is properly firewalled.

Not much hacking involved, but I nearly got expelled in high school for installing a keylogger on my teachers PC 🙁

one time my bro was checking his college email using pine and forgot to log out so i decided to download the server's unshadowed password file to crack.. a week later campus security questioned him and he had no idea what was going on... LOL

this other time i was hacking this other college's unix server and the default password for all users was "welcome" haha

i made a kix script in highschool to turn off admin access on student accounts. it was awesome actually...you just put the disk in, it autoplayed and ran the script, and finally asked you if you wanted to setup a proxy server. i looked through the code of the script and just took out the parts that denied students access to everything. i had admin priveledges basically

I would like to hear specifics...

i think im pretty sucessful at a DoS attack (from my network security class)
its just a certain program though so its more of a script kiddy type thing

and i also have a program that seems pretty good at blanking passwords on windows machines that are formated NTFS
(you need physical access though)

Back in 1997 or so I managed to work my way into my ISP's network and find a bunch of stuff, including all the credit card information for all of their subscribers! (small local isp) I actually ended up emailing them the information and told them to patch it up...

Closest I've come to anything like that was goofing around in the CS-only computer lab at university. The majority of the computers in the room were Red Hat. I'd telnet into the computer that someone I didn't like was using and run a nasty branching algorithm. Brought the computer to a screeching halt right in the middle of their work. Good times. hahahahaha
