Have you done this with a 6600gt?

Has anyone been able to run it right on a 300watt psu? thats what i have in my vaio, and i was just checking if anyone else has. the +12 rail has 17A...which i heard is decent, and the other specs were just under a quality 400watt my cousin had

i also did some system usage calculator at http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/
i heard that the 6600GT uses less power then a 5900, so i used that, and it said i would only need ~290 watts. considering the 6600GT uses less, i should be fine.

i might also add that i dont have much running on my computer, and its usually in idle mode (as long as im not playing games, it barely works at all)
and im not gonna OC the card either

According to most, i'd be fine, but this isnt about if I can, but if anyone else has, and their experiences.

thank you

My sisters computer has been running one for the last 3 months on a 250W Fortron. So long as it's a decent 300W unit, you should be fine.

On another note, I still shudder when I see that link, so many of the claimed wattages on it are no where even remotely close to reality... and their HDD wattages are just bizarre.
It's not perfect but the best watage calculator I've found so far would be is here.
Your better off looking up the specifications on your hardware yourself, then relying on any vague estimation though.. or beter yet, buying a power monitor.

I read somewhere (I can't remember where right now) that some hardware site was running a GeForce 6800 Ultra on a 250w power supply. So, I think it matters more that the quality (not the wattage) of your power supply is very good.🙂

Edit: And you want at least 20 amps on the 12-volt rail. 26a is the best, though, to have.

well, i only have 17a...but, i dont think anything else i have in the computer uses it...or from what i read it doesnt. but is that still ok?

As long as you have a quality PSU that is at least 350W, you're good to go. I am running my 6800GT on a Cooler Master 350W PSU with 18a on the 12 rails.
