What bank uses a java applet to login? Having java installed is fine. Having the applet disabled in your browser is what is needed.

Life is terrible. I read lxskllr's link then wandered the site and found out that Amazon is putting mp3s of every CD one bought in the past 15 years* on one's cloud player. So I went to look (I never touched the cloud player prior) and founds out it uses javascript.


Edit: Nevermind, works in IE but not FF, NoScript must be holding it down.
*Amazon seems to use dog years.

Javascript isn't the same as Java. It carries risks of it's own, but it's more for leading into traps than being a trap itself if that makes sense.

I have it uninstalled, I learned my lesson the hard way. A few years ago when I visited a legit website, their openX server serving ads was compromised. My Adobe Acrobat opened in the background and it used a java exploit in acrobat to inject rootkit and malware.

it's called nemID, it's a centralized log-in solution for banks, government websites and (eligible) private business websites (for instance on dba.dk which is kinda like craigslist, the seller and buyer can be nemID verified to ensure against fraud). it's kind of your online identity and signature for "serious" websites and services.

javascript is really called ecmascript and has very little to do with java.

I use the noscript add-on. Seems like 90% of scripts on any given site are entirely unnecessary, But sometimes have to spend an age re-enabling one script at a time on a site to work out which one it is that actually does something useful like enable a radio button, say (be nice if they gave them names that actually meant something!).

Java is disabled in Firefox and IE. I don't regularly use those browsers, so in the unlikely event that I need to use Java in them, I can just re-enable it temporarily.

Chrome has always prompted me to run any Java applets that it comes across, so I've left that as is.
