Yet the feds have sites that don't work w/o it.So, even the Feds are saying you should disable Java.

Same situation here. No java in browser, but I use java programs.Never had it on my browser, and I use it too much to otherwise remove it from my system.
Uninstalled it from my PCs and disabled it in the browsers.

I have to use java in my browser to log on to online banking and I have to have java installed to, well, run the java programs I write.
What bank uses a java applet to login? Having java installed is fine. Having the applet disabled in your browser is what is needed.
Life is terrible. I read lxskllr's link then wandered the site and found out that Amazon is putting mp3s of every CD one bought in the past 15 years on one's cloud player. So I went to look (I never touched the cloud player prior) and founds out it uses javascript.![]()

Javascript isn't the same as Java. It carries risks of it's own, but it's more for leading into traps than being a trap itself if that makes sense.
