have you been at the same job after getting your degree?

I have. Started in 2000 as an intern, hired full time after graduating in 04. It's pretty funny im really high on the seniority list now...lol.

I had a desire to do some exciting work like be a firefighter or police officer in 08, but that itch has long since past.

I like my web surfing job, no intention of leaving

Not the same job but the same organization. I've moved departments twice though and now have an office three or four doors down from the president. For an organization that employs more than 3000 people, I think that's pretty ok.

Degree in Network Administration. Now work as a pre-sales engineer for a VAR specializing in virtualization, servers, and storage. Same field, different specialty and job role.

Same job or same company?

I'm at the same company, but I only graduated five years ago. I interned with my current company for two summers before graduating. But I'll be starting in my third different organization next month.

I am, but was laid off and was out of it for about 4 years before being able to return to it. Oddly, after being back in it since May, I'm now the most senior person here as the guy who was here for 11 years resigned before xmas, and we hired a new person beginning of December. Yay job security!

5 jobs since graduation. 3 jobs over 5 years in the field I graduated for (animal biology), 2 jobs over the 7 years since in a different field (research lab/IT).

Different job, slightly different industry, same company.

While in college I worked IT level 3 at the phone company, managing mostly internal servers but also customer servers. Basically help whoever needed an extra hand on various projects. Was actually pretty fun since I was not really stuck in one dead end thing, there was a lot of different things going on. When I graduated I got in the same company as a help desk tech. From there I moved up to IT level 3 but dedicated to one customer. Now I'm at the NOC, which is a fairly different industry as it's more telecommunication than IT stuff. I love it. It's not customer facing so I rarely have to deal with customers directly, and it's a super low stress job and the hours are awesome because it's shift work. I'd have trouble going back to 8x5 routine again.

Graduated over 5 years ago. Since graduated again (graduate), worked in 4 different companies, 4 different job roles. At one company, I got moved around more than 5 times to different offices -- one in a different city. Now working on something completely different, might go back.

I also had lofty goals when I first graduated... Now it's just about comfort. I'm not changing the world, just another cog, meh.

i was at the same job after i graduated for a little over 5 years. i started at $48k, and after 5 years i was only making like $61k. that was some extra fire to kick my ass to get out of there. a software dev making $61k after 5 years was bad. my only regret is that i didn't leave earlier to be honest. i also wasn't learning shit there, they used the same old tech forever, and it was dated.

it's now 5 years later, and i've more than doubled my salary that i had when i left that place. my benefits are also much better than they would have been if i stayed there. i'm also MUCH more marketable now and have a lot more skills than i ever would have had since i stayed there.

i still go to lunch with the guys from that job, and i can't believe they are still working there.

Kind of. I did three part time positions all at the same time after getting my degree. Where I'm at now, was one of them. I could have went with any of the 3.

Not the same company, but same line of work. Worked for first company 17.5 years until it shut down in 2010. Worked for company #2 from March 2010 to October 2010. Worked at company #3 from October 2010 to the present.

Graduated December 1993.

If you work at the same company for 10+ years will it be hard to find another job?
It's a double edged sword because it shows you can keep up a stable position (unless you are applying for a high turnover job where they don't want long term employees!), but then all you know is that one job for a good chunk of your life. Overall it would make it easier I would say but only if you parted on good terms. Employers are always interested to know why you left your last or current job.

That depends on field. I found a new job in under 2 weeks during early 2010, wen the job market was in shambles (great recession). If you know your stuff and can show it, you can get a job regardless.

totally depends on the industry and company.

if i had stayed at my first job out of school, i would have no professional programming experience in languages other than c++ and another internal scripting language that is similar to pascal, with filemaker database experience. exactly 1 of those technologies is really relevant today.

now i have a laundry list of technologies i can put on my resume and i could get a job much easier now than i could have had i stayed at that current position.
