Have Vista 32-bit, want to upgrade to 64-bit

I bought Vista Ultimate from my University, but it only came with the 32-bit version. I really want the 64 bit version.

I've tried the Alternate Media upgrade, but it says no offers for my product key.

Is there a way to upgrade without spending any extra money?

I have a similar question. I am about to purchase a new laptop, however all of the models that I am looking at come with the 32-bit version of Vista Home Premium (oddly enough they all have 4 GB of ram). Ideally I would like to replace the 32 bit OS with Vista 64.

I own a copy of Vista Home Premium 64-bit that I used for my desktop build. Would it be possible to use my Vista 64 disk to install Vista 64 on the new laptop (using the 32-bit key from the laptop)? If that won't work I could try the Alternate Media Upgrade linked above but I have no idea if the upgrade works for licenses that are bundled with a pre-built system.

I originally bought Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Later I wanted to go to the 64 bit version. I bought the media to do this from Microsoft for like $ 10 shipped. I reinstalled using the original key and I was in business. That's all you need to do.

I had heard that for Business and Ultimate, the serial works for both 32 and 64 bit variants. I don't know anyone with Home Premium so I cannot comment on whether or not the same key works for both there.

There is no bitness inherent to any key; the only reason Leros can't get 64bit media is because he has an OEM copy, while MS's program is for retail copies. If he can get a Vista x64 disc, he can install 64bit Vista until the cows come home.

Ah, excellent to know.

Thank you very much, that sounds like exactly what I hoped to hear.
