Have very easy question to be answered about Win2k (versions) 5 CAL or 10 CAL related

I found a really good deal on win2k server for $100, original. The guy says it's 2 cds - original CDs and the manual is included.

Problem: I looked on e-bay and every1 is selling the 5 cal or 10 cal or 25 cal for like $500+, LOL.

He said he bought this one original for $800. Is there some way I can check which version it is? Is it on the CD or something, or written in the manual somewhere?

Can someone please help me here so that I don't get ripped off / rip him off?

EDIT:

Oh BTW, reason I was asking was because he does not know which version it is! All he knows is "Windows 2000 server" - that's about it. He doesn't even know if it's small business / advanced server or whatever.

Thanks,

Tibor

CALs are Client Access Licenses and are generally just a piece of paper that comes w/ Server as proof that you can have that many clients attach to the Server. You should see something in the manual. from the guy saying how many CALs there are included. If there aren't any, then assume he's just trying to sell you the media, which isn't worth $100. But, I'm not sure on that. You should have something with CALs on it.

Disks and manuals are worthless. You need the license certificate to be legal.

Edit: To be exact, you need a server license which may or may not include a certain numbers of CALs with it just to install the server legally. You then need a CAL for every client that connects to the server for standard server stuff. (file shares, printing, DHCP, etc. - connecting to an IIS server is exempt from needing CALs) The certificate states if the license is for the server, or server + x number of CAL's. Any additional CAL's you buy are nothing more than a certificate stating the number. Windows 2000 Professional workstation licenses include a server CAL so you only need to purchase additional CALs for Win 95/98/Me/NT4 workstations.

Damn I'll make a copy of my Win2k CD and sell you the original for $100 w/o license to ;)

Seriously though 1KrazyFool and bozo1 are right, the Media is worthless. A CDR copy is just a legal as a "real" CD as long as you have a real license. Conversely a "real" CD is every bit as illegal as a CDR copy if you don't have a real license.
