Have there been any advancements in "digital film?"

I remember seeing a few years back that a digital "film" was being developed for regular 35mm cameras that would essentially make any camera "digital." I've been looking into buying a 35mm SLR to get into photography because I dont have the cash for a digital SLR, and if "digital film" has come along, and down in price more importantly since I last heard about it, I'd be more willing to sink some money into a 35mm SLR body and lenses rather than saving up for DSLR. Anyone have some info?
