Have socket 939 - should I upgrade now?

I am assuming that the production of socket 939 processors will be stopped eventually and the prices may go up. Is this the right time to upgrade?

I am fine with the speed of my computer at this moment.

Should I get a Athlon X2 4600?

Do you mean upgrade just the processor? Or upgrade to AM2 platform? Hardly matters anyway - here's the short answer:

Is this the right time to upgrade?

Nope. Why would you upgrade if you're happy with your machine's performace?

I do not want to upgrade to socket AM2, just the processor to dual-core. You are right that if I'm satisfied with the performance I do not need to upgrade. However, maybe down the road if I need more speed, the socket 939 processors might not be readily available or too expensive. I think I'm leaning away from upgrading. Maybe I'll upgrade my monitor. Thanks.

Go with a faster GPU if you're a gamer or as you said new monitor or something you will likely benefit from alot more. You will end up replacing the mobo/memory/cpu all at once in the future anyway more likely than not.

I'm in the same boat. My old Newcastle 3800 still does all I need, but getting an X2-4600 or 4800 would extend the life of my current system and allow me to keep a perfectly good board, 2-1g sticks of PC3200 (at a time when memory prices are going up) and my 9800 AGP card. The card is old but I am not a big gamer. It still plays the games I like such as HL2, CoD, and CS. I like speed but not enough to spend $700+ for a new Conroe or AM2 system.

In the same boat as u, but with a 146 Opteron. been keeping an Eye on the 4400+ thinking I will grab it just before Xmas. I think by next year S939 chips will become difficult to find instore. But then again u can always Ebay it.

i think you should look at things this way. if you can sell your old s939 processor for a decent price, and thus get an X2 processor for a low marginal cost, then i don't think there is much to worry about. Prices on s939 X2 processors (except for teh 4800+) have already started to rebound after the price cuts in July (ie supply is starting to go down, so prices are back up).

I was able to sell my old 3700+ to a friend for a decent price ($75) and then bought myself a 4400+ 89W when they were $220 (now they are $250). So i got the end-of-life upgrade (ie I will never buy another part for this computer; in a year or two I will just upgrade to a whole new system) for my s939 system for a marginal cost of $145 dollars. It was a bit expensive, but I do a lot of photo/video editing and other sorts of multi-tasking, so going dual-core was a good idea for me.

Basically, if you will REALLY take advantage of the dual-core processoring, and can sell your old parts to lower the marginal upgrade cost, then it isn't a horrible idea to upgrade, since i think prices on the s939 dual cores will just keep going up as the supplies run out (you may already have missed the best prices). but for many many people, a 3800+ single core is more than enough processing power to keep them going for at least a year a two. And if you fall into that category, then upgrading would just be throwing money away.
