Have Samsung DLP should I buy a Samsung Blu-Ray?

Title says it all.

Should I match the Blu-ray and the TV or does it really matter?

The big advantage of matching them is that one remote will control them both.
Right now I use three remotes, TV, DVD and Theater Box.

Any other thoughts on a new DVD player? Looking to stay inexpensive sub $300 range.

there is no advantage to having the same brand of both. Though, as linked above, the best deal right now is on the Samsung @ Amazon right now as it comes w/ Matrix box set for free (sell it if you don't want it)

It's basically 4 movies. It sells for $75 on amazon. You could probably ebay it for $60 or so if you don't want it and get the player for $155.

It's basically 4 movies. It sells for $75 on amazon. You could probably ebay it for $60 or so if you don't want it and get the player for $155.

You missed it. The current promotion is 2 free Blu-ray movies. Not as good of a deal, but still pretty good nonetheless.

I have a Samsung DLP and picked up the Sony BDP-S350 a couple weeks ago.

I had a Samsung DVD Recorder prior but it was a POS.

PS3 is the most future-proof blu-ray player since it has a live internet connection, unlimited storage for firmware and interactive features, and a fast general-purpose multicore CPU.

Sony will also keep making PS3s for another 5-8 years, while a standalone player might be discontinued in 6 months with no more firmware updates after that.

I just picked up a Sony BDP-BX1 (essentially a BDP-S350 with free HDMI cable and backlit remote, sold only at Costco and Sam's Club) last weekend and like it, but I will be taking it back tomorrow, since Samsung just released firmware for the BD-P 2550 that allows you to stream Netflix movies and Pandora. For me that is totally worth an extra $80 (I paid $280 for the Sony and will buy the Sammy for $360 with a 10%-off Best Buy coupon). Also, the Samsung has a Silicon Optix upscaling chip that is supposed to be excellent for SD DVDs. As it happens I too have a Samsung DLP set (720p 50" HLR-5067W). I use a Harmony 880 remote and run all my audio through a Denon 3808, though - the ability to use a common Samsung remote means nothing to me.

Just didn't want to drop $399 for a PS3. Plus I don't want a game system. I have enough things to distract me as it is

I picked up the Samsung BD-P2550 this weekend - Best Buy has it on sale for $350. Seems like a really nice player. The Netflix streaming and Pandora work great, and it has worked perfectly with the BDs and DVDs I've tried. I haven't seen enough DVD content to speak intelligently about the quality of the upscaling but it seems very nice. Whoever set up the default Harmony remote configuration must have been on crack, though - I still need to manually configure that (this is a Logitech issue, not a Samsung one).
