I was testing out a dually system for my friend. Its a dual slot1 board with mix-matched slockets and dual p3 733/133/1.75v . Well to make a long story short i only checked the jumper chart on one of the slockets (cpu 1). So when i cranked it up i hear this horrible screeching noise and i look down instantly and see smoke coming from under the #2 cpu heatsink. Horrible electrical burning smell as you can imagine. Instantly unplugged the cord from the power supply. The bottom of the cpu now has black stuff all over it which i assume is something that burnt. My question is would it be ok to put the burnt cpu in a diffrent slocket just to see if it will work? or should i just assume that it is destroyed and buy my friend a new chip. Any experience / comments / suggestions will help me greatly. If someone has an answer they can try me on aol instant messenger Skunkboy8734. Thanks again for your time and have a nice morning

No you shouldn't. If you smelled a very acrid smell that was likely the silicon of the processor. If the black burn marks that you're describing is on the processor and not the slocket adapter I would definitely write it off. Putting it in another board will likely damage it if it hasn't already damaged that one.

thank you for the quick response. i will not attempt to use this cpu any more. i owe my friend a 733 and a slocket now. i dont think the board sustained any damage as the system was on for a minimal amount of time. the board did boot after this happend with just cpu1 in place. i dont think intel will give me an rma on this cpu so its 100% loss. but at least nothing seriously bad happened. thanks again for the response, Mark

By the way, a lot of the time the steppings have to be the same in dually boards especially p3s. I don't think you can just go out and buy him a new chip. I'm not even sure you can get them that slow anymore.

The pentium 3 has very good protection. Better than the athlon xp in fact. the XP 2600 and 2800+ don't even have thermal diodes anymore according to toms. I since it's clock locked and meant to run at 133 and most slockets won't jumper over 1.75 I doubt that any incorrect setting on your part might have caused this. There are other things like broken pins and pins that are folder over on each other during insertion (i've seen this) but I doubt it was a jumper problem. If you just bought the CPU I wouldn't assume that you were solely to blame. Send it to intel and let them know it's part of a matching set. They will test it out for you and determine if it's covered or not.

well we bought this rig from 2cpu for a half life server and we hadnt tested it yet. the only p3 733's new are like $90 if you can find them at all. these cpu's are the same stepping and theyre 9 apart in batch number. i have smp experience and all that i just didnt really look at the slocket all that much. looking at it now it goes up to 2.6 volts so theres no telling how much voltage i put into it. Also the jumper chart is really shady in the way its layed out. I think if i can get him a same stepping p3 733 i should be ok and the smp should work as long as i get a slocket that supports it. thanks again - mark

these are 1.75 volt cpu's so most slockets shouldnt have a problem running them.
