Oh yeah, they're still keeping the LGA package. They just added a whole bunch of new pins. You should check out some pics of the new CPUs -- they're noticeably larger than the old LGA775s, and they're a bit rectangular.

I was looking at i7 when Microcenter had one of the chipsets for 250 - Which was only 70 more than the Q6600 I'm running right now (give or take). The problem was the mobo's are all really expensive and the RAM (DDR3) was pricey compared to DDR2. 70 more for the CPU, but probably 200 more in RAM/MOBO upgrades. Just wasn't worth it for me.

Going from a A64 3000+ -> Q6600 has been... a nice upgrade :p

My computer is around 2.5 years old. I plan on upgrading it in May.

AMD 4200x2, x1900xt, 2 GB DDR2-800

Nice rig, and it's coming along nicely, but I am going to get out the big guns for Empire and Operation Flashpoint 2. :p

Are you folks trying to say there's a processor better/faster than my P4 3.06 with HYPER-THREADING?

Shens...

I still have a tiny linux box running on a 200 mhz Pentium PRO. Didn't even waste my time with that MMX garbage, a Pentium Pro.. sweet.

I'm looking at some HDD upgrades myself. Kind of torn though - the 300GB Velociraptors are cheap, only $200 or so. Still, they can't hold a candle to an Intel SSD performance-wise, but those are $500-$600 for only 80GB (saw some article saying that a 160GB version just came out though).

I haven't upgraded in 5 years :(

I upgraded my mom's Athlon 1100 (I built it in Feb 2001) to a Venice 3000+ finally. She's like WHOAH. Yeah. Exactly. Not to mention I threw in a couple of 7200.10s there for blazing speed after upgrading to a WD Black 1TB.

Now what to do with my Opteron 170..... *shrug*

Will wait for a summer upgrade. Puts my computer at 4 years old although the original HD doesn't exist anymore (7200.9 went to my mom's comp), I did throw out the 3700+ for an Opteron after a year and the 7800GT just got switched for a 4850.

I will look into that CPU+Mobo+DDR3 change though soon.

Yeah, I am building my dad a new computer for xmas.

its basically my old rig, old 80GB HD (which is more than enough for him) BUT new mobo AM2 (cheapest thing on newegg) + a Single Core AMD AM2 and a 1GB of RAM, which is infinitely more than his 256K RAM slot he has in his garbage box right now.

You'll be ok OP, you have a C2D after all. Don't bother going in there if you use AMD though...

Heh, j/k. I always say that I'm not going to upgrade to the latest and greatest just for the hell of it, but somehow end up doing it anyway :confused:. So I guess I'll see if I can make it to Sandy Bridge or whatever the successor to Nehalem is this time around without caving in.

I had intended to wait for the next one... but then Microcenter had the 920 for $250.
