Have Not Purchased a Wireless Router in Ages..Need Assistance

Ok,

I have not purchased a router in ages.... I plugged my modem straight into my machine for years now...but I am moving in with my GF...she uses wirelss, but has a wirelss DSLrouter/modem from ATT&T which will be going away since I am upgrading to abetter cable connection.

SO... I need a new wireless router. I got a 20mbps connection (well...an UP TO 20 mpbs connection). Also I see all this wirless N crap...I have no idea what that is....I remember G from years ago...did we go through that many letters already? Also looking for something with good range and stability at high speeds wirelessly. Also running Vistax64 on my machine..and the GF has a Mac...sadly...

Anyone reccommend types of routers (N or whatever) or any particular one they have used before?

I have used Linksys i nthe past and I was content with it. If ayone reccomends something better or more user friendly...let me know.

what about an N router? what are those? whats the difference. I would like the option to get use of the high speed and reliability I am use to if I get a laptop at a later date.

I'm checking out this buffalo right now...looks like its pretty serious...going to chekc into this TOMATO stuff...

If you need draft_N there suppose to be a thechnical reason got it. Otherwise you waste money.

If you do not need the extra features of Tomamto you need to Flash the Buffalo is good as is.

There is no 802.11n, only DRAFT n. So it's not done yet, and could render a lot of routers obsolete if it's ever ratified (yay committees :roll🙂. G is fine for most things.

I've got 2 buffalos and they've been nice. The default firmware seemed good, and I didn't have any issues with it (other than the lack of one feature). dd-wrt has been pretty nice, and wasn't too hard to get on my buffalo routers.

Nothing wrong with having a Mac.

Bose.

To my (admittedly limited) knowledge, Bose does not offer any real technical differences from other speaker manufacturers. Apple provides OS X, which is not available from any other PC manufacturer.

There is Nothing wrong in using a MAC, or buying from Sharper Image.

The "Funny" thing is when people who buy according to Fashion peer group trends, Personality/Social variables that they care about, have the need to translate those needs to False Technological Excuses.

If One tells me that he/she likes the looks and the Social appeal of a certain Sharper Image's product, I have No issue with it.

But if a person tells me that he/she buys it because it provides for the price better technology, I feel sorry for him/her.

Similarly are most of the current purchases of Draft_N.

Since your GF is already using the wireless, I'd start by finding out if it's G or draft N. If you both can use G, that's what I'd go with as N is still in the draft stages.

G routers
OK: Linksys - What I use, but it's not worth it unless you are going to use tomato or dd-wrt.
Better: ASUS - Can still use tomato / ddwrt. From what I've read it has better hardware than the linksys.
Best: Buffalo - Good stock firmware, can use tomato / ddwrt, has built in amp for better wireless coverage.
