Have MP3s changed your musical tastes?

MP3s have opened me up to a LOT of new music that previously would have been impossible for me to hear without spending thousands of dollars on CDs. I think MP3s are a good thing for music. You can try new things, find rare live recordings that are near impossible to find on CD, and try before you buy. If I really do love an album, I do buy it. Couple of recent purchases are some Depeche Mode albums. If it wasn't for MP3s, I would have never discovered this amazing band and style of music.

CD sales are going up, so how was Napster hurting the industry? (other than singles, but who wastes their money on those anyway, unless you are a huge fan of the band?) I think it was benefitting the industry, what do you think?

most certainly they have. if it wasn't for mp3's i wouldn't have half as many cd's as i do(maybe that's a bad thing? i spend money i don't have too often ) and i wouldn't have heard of all of the amazing bands i know of now

I listen to the same type of music, but it sure helped me expand my horizon within the genre, and let me try out new artists and such. So, yes

Yeah. God forbid anyone should buy anything that's not on the top 40 chart.

That could be a factor, but still much of their profits are from cd/tape sales. If ordinary guy Joe Blow can get a computer with a burner, get roadrunner or dsl, and download an album and burn it, the music company just lost $10 or so (minus shipping charges and reseller markups). If 100 million people do this, the companies lose quite a bit of dough.

I should mention that when I say lose, I don't mean they spent $10 on something and it got stolen, I mean they lost $10 that might've gone to them in profits.

yeah, that's true. But this doesn't explain why CD sales have not dropped at all, they only rise.

Hasn't changed my tastes at all. I have always listened to a wide variety of music.

Not really they have only help me to quench my thirst for different music, without hving to spend lot of money on CD's. Dont get me wrong, they havent stop me from buying CD's, they have just given me the freedom to not have to choose d/l an Mp3 here go buy a CD there.

It's helped - I listen to everything now except classical and jazz.

Regarding buying CD's - for the first time in about 2 years, I've finally sucked up and bought 3 CDs since Napster has gone down the hole. It has hurt the industry in some ways but a lot of people don't understand the concept of Napster or don't want to spend 20 min per MP3 on their AOL connections, so the amount of CDs they buy hasn't decreased.

Hell yes they have! I've gotten into a lot of new music because of MP3s.

I'd say yeah, I probably wouldn't have bought half the trance CD's I have now if it weren't for MP3's. Some of the more underground hip hop I probaby would never had bought either if it weren't for MP3's.

I agree with you Mp3s have opened the world to a lot of independant bands which nobody would have paid attention to before.As for the major labels, they can keep producing all the corporate junk they want.Its the consumers that make the final decision to buy or not.To answer your question,yes I have started to listen to other genres of music thanks to the internet.

The mp3 game has brought me loads of music that I would never find on shelves.

Oh most definately... I used to just listen to grunge but as i found that i could download songs i've expanded to listening to rap, r&amp;b, and other forms of rock. It's definately done me good

Absolutly. Beofre I was only intop hiphop(mainly Mos Def, Common), and now I'm heavily into SRV, Van Halen, and other guitar heros.
