Have I bought the wrong Power Supply for my HIS x1900xtx???

I've already purchased all my parts and am almost ready to put the system together. I'm worried that I purchased the wrong power supply and that it won't supply enough power for the x1900xtx video card. The power supply is a Antec

P4 3.4Ghz @ 3.7Ghz
ABIT ic7-max3
HIS x800XT ATI Radeon 256Mb
2Gb Geil PC4000 DDR
WD 74Gb Raptor 10,000 RPM
WD-200Gb 7200 RPM
WD-320Gb 7200 RPM
Audigy2 ZS
Logitech Z-5500 Digital Speakers
Samsung CD-RW
Pioneer DVD-RW
Dell 2405FPW 24" LCD
Samsung 193T 19" LCD

It is a possibility, juding from the list of parts in your signature you probably do not have enough current left for pair of video cards (x1900xtx and x800xt).

Both of these PSU's will run it with out trouble.

I won't be running the parts in my signature with my new system.

My new system will have the following parts:
AMD X2 4800+
ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe
HIS X1900XTX video card
150gb WD Raptor
creative x-fi platinum sound card
2Gb corsair pc-3500 twinxpro DDR
ANTEC 550w NeoHE
DVD-RW optical drive
floppy drive
4x 80mm case fans
1x 90mm CPU fan

So there isn't a great deal of devices I'm fitting. So is it possible the power supply could work fine with this setup? I may fit another x1900 crossfire master card in the near future, will the power supply still be able to handle it?.

Try it and if it does not work then buy a new one.

yes, it could. i'm pretty sure your antec has enough juice but if you're gonna run crossfire, it may or may not. you could try one of those PSU calculators

The hard drives are most susceptible to damage from a lack of avalable power. Data corruption is a real possiblity and so are head crashses. If you have data corruption then a low level reformat should correct most of them. Every other component in your pc will be ok.

check this review I found about the power supply in question Review. It says that the 12v lines should handle 54amps. Each 12v rail supports 18amp x 3 = 54amp. HIS recommends 30amp for 1x x1900xtx and 38amp for 2x x1900 in crossfire. So this power supply should be more than okay to supply enough power, hey?

You'll be absolutely fine. Your idle power draw should be something like 150-200W, load should be ~250-300W. These are very rough estimates.

My machine, for comparison, draws 120W at bootup:

Athlon 2600+
1GB RAM
Fujitsu 36GB 10krpm SCSI
Seagate 200GB 7200.7
Maxtor 120GB DM+9
Gigabyte 6600GT (500/1.1), passive, VIVO
DVDRW/DVDROM drives
SBLive! 5.1
Firewire card
LSI U160 PCI SCSI card
Floppy, card reader, fan controller, four fans, etc.

Just remember though some PSU's are underrated and will not put out their advertised amperage at room temperatures.

I would be shocked if a 550W Antec couldn't handle that system. I'm fairly sure you could throw in a X1900XT for crossfire without problems.

This whole power hungry thing is not going to get better over time from what I've seen. I understand your concerns. Still, you've picked a very stout power supply.

OCZ is developing a 700 watt or so model to address these shortfalls on the high end, high power dual card systems. In fact, they even have a 900 watt unit in the pipeline someplace in development.

Anyone buying stock in utilities?

yet there are other brands that already have 600+ watt systems on the market that adequately address these issues!!
