Suggest you download and run in SAFE Mode either AVG Free
or Kaspersky Antivirus .... it sounds like you picked up a Trojan
Dialer someplace

There's a stickied thread at the top of this forum that's perfect for malware removal.

Yeah, if it were me, I'd uninstall Avast, install AOL Kaspersky minus the optional security toolbar, max out all of the settings in all the settings panels, update, reboot into Safe Mode, and make pizza*.

Remember, don't just install, update & scan... remember to configure first. You want to max out all the detection sliders so it's prying into compressed files and stuff.

*while running an exhaustive antivirus scan in Safe Mode, of course

Well, you do have a modem.....maybe the diagnostic message isn't quite correct. Check the cords to make sure everything is kosher. Take a look at your event log. DL Avant or Opera and see if those show the same issue. Also uninstall each of those extensions before uninstalling FF....in fact, I'd try that first. I'd wager one of those things is buggering you up.

to remove firefox completely you have to delete your profile. i don't remember exactly where it is but i think it's under my documents\application data\mozilla
or something like that

I dont see this as any virus - its not a pop up - its an error message
FWIW there was a 6 hr redback internet backbone outage yesterday
Also, one telco has been having dns server probs and peeps have had to input alternate server addresses

also could you explain what you mean by "there is no modem"???
you have to have either a dsl modem or a dial up modem, or a router, or be on a network connected to the same

Quote:

Error 692 There was a hardware failure in the modem.

Close all programs, restart the computer and try again.

If the problem persists, then:

Try dialling using Hyperterminal, see can you get through to the username/password prompt.

If you can, then reinstall the modem. (Be careful with WinModems, make sure you use the disks provided by th manufacturer)

I agree that it's an error message, but I am not sure about your conclusion. If the machine is on either DSL or a cable "modem" then Windows doesn't see these as modem connections, and you shouldn't get a modem error. As far as Windows is concerned you're just on an ethernet LAN to a gateway/switch. It doesn't even know what the device is at the other end.

It's definitely possible that FF just uses slightly misleading language when it can't open a socket, but this looks suspicious, and if FF is tossing this error because it can't get a connection it would be the first time I've seen it or heard about it. Typically a browser using a high-speed LAN connection will just give you a DNS failure page if it can't connect. Never seen one pop a dialog.

What's more likely, I think, is that some third-party executable or DLL is trying to use the modem to dial out, and can't because either there isn't one, or the drivers aren't installed, or there is a modem with drivers but obviously no line plugged into it.

I don't use Firefox so I couldn't tell you if it had this feature or not, but could it possibly be trying to connect via another method (i.e. Dial up) because it's not able to establish a connection via LAN? I know IE has an option under the Internet Options ->Connections that allows you to set an alternate if no network is detected. Doesn't really explain why it's always happening, but I thought I'd throw it out as an option.

er, I didnt make any conclusion, I have no idea what you are not agreeing with.
didnt you see the "quote" notice in my post?
That was a quote from one of the three links I posted
Those links were merely lines of thought to persue
Parenthetically, I noted the internet problems as of the day of his post.
When I make a conclusion, you will be the first to know.
I had/have no idea what his prob is, because we had no info about his hardware situation.

How about out the dlink model #??
And why dont you get rid of "Url etc." stuff in your image link thats ruining the format of this thread. You only need to post the link text as long as it has http:// and it will hyperlink

Note: The following are thought starters - not conclusions.
SOMETHING on your PC is trying to connect via dial-up to the internet, and is not set up to deal with a router. You have not said if you were EVER error free with FF - no extensions?
Or is this just came out of nowhere?

A. I assume because you uninstalled/reinstalled FF, you did NOT reinstall extensions?
B. I am still unclear - it now even happens with IE - no FF install??
C. What version of FF are you installing? (1.508 is bug free - 2.01 is latest)
D. SOME FF extensions employ ACTIVEX controls which may help hackers to load something, like telephony. Or perhaps some old game or software is trying to update.
E. You need to go to processes in adaware selection and see each and every process running and google it (or processfinder software) The XP one sucks.
F. You will need to try a system rollback of >30 days, since I assume it didnt happen before that?
G.You will need to do a HiJackThis scan
H. Some setting in WINDOWS/control panel/network may have changed. There should be no dialup connection, and never dial a connection should be checked and everything in internet config on your adapter in cntrl panel should be set on auto.
I. While a router is good for security. when actually scanning for trojans, you need something like Kaspersky, NOD32 or Grisoft AVG. I believe the AVG lite is still free, and Kaspersky lite from AOL free is in HotDeals.
J. While I have never used zonealarm in conjunction with a router, if you installed it and you did not disable notifications, it would tell you very quickly which program was trying to access the internet, dial up or otherwise, one by one as they appeared.

lAs an afterthought, some IP's allow switching to dial up (phone line) when the DSL is down

Maybe conclusion was a poor choice of word. You indicated that you didn't believe it was a virus, linking that to the fact that the dialog was an error message and not a pop-up. You also indicated that the OP's statement about not having a modem had to be incorrect, for the reasons you gave. My point was simply that a DSL or Cable modem is not a 'modem' from Windows' point of view, and that it was still likely that something was trying to dial out. Another poster gave what I thought was a good tip in that perhaps FF is attempting to create a dial-up connection, possibly due to the Internet problems you referred to. I still think that is unlikely since the OP shouldn't have any dial-up networking adapter installed if he doesn't have a modem. But I guess it is worth checking.

I think i found out what it was!!!! i started noticing that it was happening while I was surfin myspace sites only. I think somehow some activeX stuff is in some peoples myspace code.

It was just so random before, i thought it was something on my computer, but today i got the same dialup connecting thing in IE7 while visiting myspace sites only.
