Have I been capped?!

I just ran the DSL reports speed test and here are my results...

Megapath server:
Test running..........
** Speed 437(down)/94(up) kbps **
(At least 8 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

I used to be at 1mbps (down) and like 200 or more up!

OMG! I KNEW I wasn't insane and that I really was noticing it a lot slower!

Fsck. 🙁

Time to call roadrunner.

EDIT: Wait, that's only like 54KB/sec down- and I get a lot more than that! Hmm...a good scientist always tries more than once...heh...

Tried it again...

Megapath server:
Test running.........
** Speed 583(down)/100(up) kbps **
(At least 11 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

Gonna try the other server now...

Linkline server:
Test running..........
** Speed 609(down)/86(up) kbps **
(At least 12 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

Trying linkline again...

Linkline server:
Test running.........
** Speed 651(down)/97(up) kbps **
(At least 13 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

Odd...the UL speed is fairly steady, but the download speed keeps improving. But it's still crap!

Looks like I spoke too soon...ran it again for "fun"...

Linkline server:
Test running.........
** Speed 557(down)/61(up) kbps **
(At least 11 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

Ran megapath again:
Test running.........
** Speed 289(down)/77(up) kbps **
(At least 5 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

Cripes...well, before I ran it I hit start and it said the server was busy, so I refreshed and hit start again. I hope it's just their servers! Just tried to run it again and it said the sever was busy again.

Ran linkline again:
Test running.........
** Speed 718(down)/57(up) kbps **
(At least 14 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

This is utterly disgusting...what is wrong with this damn thing?!

Should I disconnect my Router, hook my cable modem directly to my computer and try again? =\ It shouldn't slow things down...but maybe... 🙁

Your download/upload bandwidth is still a function of the load on the router and ISP dsl modem your dsl line goes into... so if the ISP is experiencing heavy load, your up/dl will be lower...

For example, I'm sitting on a 100Mbit duplex lan hooked up through an ATM to the backbone which is itself connected to the internet via an OC3... so theoretically I should be able to get 100Mbit/s download/upload...right... but in practice i only get about 50KB with a peak of about 200KB so about 400Kbits to 1.6Mbits...

Talked to a nice CS guy for RoadRunner did some tests did some stuff, now he is getting some ticket approved- I assume for me to get someone out to my house to check this thing out.

Heh, I got around all of the stuff that might imply that I have a router. He needed a tracert sent to him, so I chopped off the first hop out from my router- he needed my IP from winipcfg, so I checked my router's browser window for it. Hey, it worked. I know it's not my router because I've had this thing for awhile and it never slowed me down until now.

Hmmm...now he is pulling up the diagnostics on the modem...wonder if he?ll catch me?he just asked if I am trying to download something?<gulp>?yeah?well, whatever.

He didn?t catch the router- sweet.

He just asked me to download something from their server?told him my speeds.

So now he is sending out a laptop technician on July 3rd sometime between 5PM-8PM. =(

NOTE: I am capped...at ~1mbps! So yeah, my ~90KB/sec that I get is sh!t.

capped?? i have RR in los angeles and once in aa while, when i do a test, i get 5 mega bits!!

of course that's only sometimes...usually, i get 1.5 consistently.

dont you hate it when you get cappe on??!!

OMG! Now that I look back on some old screenshots, I used to be getting 1.5mbps and over, not 1mbps! :Q

BTW, I'm not capped at 1mbps, originally the guy thought I was located in Florida. 😛 Just realized that is when he told me my cap. So, I have no idea what my real cap is or if i even have one!

Just gave DSLreports test a try on my RR,

1320 down / 399 up

just to give you a referance.

Try downloading from YOUR OWN ftp server (Serv-U, etc).
Data will not be "copied" directly but will be transferred over the internet, at the speed of your uplink. (So this only tests the max. up-speed).

Wow...is this DSL reports speed test accurate? I was measured at:

945 down & 477 up. That's a little off...if not, I better get my happy ass back to work.

Second try...

1002 down & 478 up better but that should definately be at the low end of my bandwidth.

Oh cr@p. I just hooked my cable modem directly up to my computer...well, the lag in rogue spear is gone, my pings are improving (tracert)- maybe it's cuz it's midnight now and I live in a neighborhood where most people are asleep by now? =\

Geez...why would my router be slowing me down!? :Q

My download speed just jumped about 30-40KB/sec from tucows too.

What the hell?! :Q

Megapath server:
Test running.........
** Speed 619(down)/93(up) kbps **
(At least 12 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

Megapath server:
Test running.........
** Speed 664(down)/81(up) kbps **
(At least 13 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

Linkline Server:
Test running.........
** Speed 917(down)/95(up) kbps **
(At least 18 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

HOLY CRAP!

Linkline Server:
Test running.........
** Speed 887(down)/78(up) kbps **
(At least 17 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

I'm gonna run all of the tests I have been doing (tracert to yahoo, tucows download, DSLReports) at a peak time tomorrow- like 7 or 8PM with both the router connect and the router disconnected.

I just downloaded the same file from the same server with the router now, the download finished in 73 seconds as opposed to 69 seconds. A few KB/sec difference, no big deal.

I can't run the DSLReports tests though- megapath is full (tried many times) and linkline won't let me cuz i've done it so many times. 😛

Tracert to yahoo is faster than with the cable modem though.

Time to try Rogue Spear to see if I get any lag.

Rogue Spear seems fine...and the nail in the coffin...

I went to http://update-server/ like I did earlier with that guy...~200KB/sec- it was ~90KB/sec earlier. WOW! I dunno what I did, but I think it worked! 🙂

Road Runner doesnt care if you share your cable connections to other computers in your household. The only thing they say is that it may degrade your speed when all the computers access the net at the same time.

dont know whats wrong with your road runner, but out here in so cal, standard is 2 meg down, 384K up. I uncapped mine by going through the buiness hotline. I pay $199/mo for 2 meg upload/8 meg download and 13 ip's 🙂

I called up roadrunner (1-877-313-BEEP) and they said that a router is allowed on a business account but not a residential one.

Just ran a MSN/CNet bandwidth tester, sh!tty results (600kbps).

Just ran this bandwidth tester and got:
Download:
1379.7 kilobits / sec
172.5 kilobytes / sec
Upload:
62.3 kilobits / sec
7.8 kilobytes / sec

Good down...bad up. 🙁

EDIT: 4:20AM- just ran that one again...crappy 758down, 101 kilobits up though (turned on DMZ hosting, maybe that helped?).

Tried this bandwidth tester too.
Down:

Starting download test
Http request: http://speedtest.mybc.com/200kbyte.test
Http connection opened in 0 milliseconds
Test performed in 1100 milliseconds
Total bytes downloaded: 204800 bytes
Throughput: 1.4204545 Mbps

EDIT: 4:20AM- just ran that one again...crappy...like 600 or something.
4:24AM- ran it again...on the 1meg, it was like 1.86mbps, on the 2meg it was like 600kbps.

Ran another one...from here and got 1375 down.

Ran the 500KB one from here and got:
547.7 kbits/s down
67.1 K bytes/sec up

Oh, I'm getting good speeds ~140-150 from tucows and from http://update-server/ I'm getting in the 200s.

EDIT: 4:20AM- still getting good speeds from tucows and update-server though.

Gonna do it all again during peak hours tomorrow.
