Have HP Pavillion, wanna dump HP junk

Hi all,
My niece's HP Pavillion crashed due to spyware and I had to restore it with the system recovery feature. I don't like all the junk HP installed on it and can't get Windows Update to work and so I wanna try a system rebuild with my old XP system builder disk and reinstall all the drivers.

1. Will I be able to completely get rid of all the stuff from HP when I reformat the hard drive?

2. Will I be able to use the XP license that came with the HP (Its on a sticker stuck to the case)?

XP system builder?
What is that?

If you have a retail XP CD, you can install it on this computer. But, I don't think you can use the key that came with the Pavilion since the Pavilion XP is OEM.
Unless the XP CD that you have is also OEM.
If your XP CD is retail and you decide to go ahead and install it on the Pavilion using the key that you have with your retail XP, you will need to un-install XP from any other machine that it is installed on since you need one license for each machine.

As far as the HP stuff goes, if you install XP fresh using an XP CD and reformat as a part of the XP installation, there will be no HP junk left.

Alternatively, you can use the recovery CDs that came with Pavilion to restore it and then un-install any HP utility that is there. Then, you can make an image of the drive if you have an image utility like Drive Image and use it the next time you need to re-install.

I don't understand why HP would not let windows update work!

I have a pavilion 753n. Too much crap. The recovery feature at the hp logo is great but rather have a clean install. I used my friend's retail xp pro. On 3 computers, activated like 100 times. go to the ms website see if you can order another licences or something.

HP's don't come with recovery CD's any more. They are on the restore partition instead. There is a way to create recovery cd's from this partition though, but HP is not willing to supply the end user with actual CD's of the drivers/software/WinXP even if you ask for a copy of it.
