I built my system about a year and a half ago with the classic set-up of an Abit BH6 MB with celeron 300a @ 464,128mb pc100 ram. I havent been keeping up with new developments since then and would like to run a faster pentium chip now. Question is what is the current best "bang for the buck" chip for this set-up, since its slot 1 configuration . In other words what would you do for a faster chip in this situation while trying to keep the motherboard. either a cheap pentium 3 or an overclocked celeron? thanks

Well, it depends on how much you want to spend.

You could buy a Celeron2, in which case I would suggest the 533A, and go as high as it can.

Or, if you want to spend more, the fastest Coppermine E variant (not the EB).

If you are on a budget (and most of us are) I would suggest the Celeron2 as you need a fast (high-multiplier) Coppermine, as your BH6 cannot run at FSB speeds beyond 133 MHz, and thus the teoretical max OC for a Coppermine is 33%, whereas it is 100% for a Celeron2.

I had the same setup as you.

I got a CII 566 clocked to 953 now.

Good and cheap upgrade.

PropNut, I just went through an upgrade on a BH6. Unlike you, I had one of the PII-300's that ran @ 450MHz, but boards are the same. You've received a couple of responses re Celeron2, and that's a good choice.

I chose to go the P!!! route, and put on an FC-PGA P!!!-650, along w/ an Abit Slotket!!! and a Thermaltake Golden Orb heatsink/fan unit. This is on a rev1.02 BH6, w/ the first generation MOS-FET chips. I've been running the 650 for three weeks now, and it hasn't hiccuped once. I picked up the OEM 650 for $195, new.

It mainly depends on your video card and brand of ram. (for running above 66mhz on AGP and 124 - 133 mhz, cas 2 ram) If you can't run those speeds with your periferials then stick with CII. (about $150 complete)

For your purposes, the celeron2 at 533 or 566 is probably your best bet. They apparently o/c to 100mhz fsb rather well, just like your 300a. Guaranteed o/c chips may be available, check around. Your existing memory & vid card and everything else should work ok,You'll need a slocket and maybe a new heatsink/fan, the retail intel socket fcpga units are actually pretty decent. Be sure that your board revision#, slocket adapter, and bios will handle it before you buy anything. Other threads in this forum cover the subject well, keep reading and good luck.

Thanks guys for the responses (very helpful) I may be leaning toward the 533/566 celeron.
Thanks PropNut
