Have any TVs caught up with the picture quality of the Sony Wega?

Have a 27 inch Panasonic Tau here. Nice crisp picture/flat and not bad sound off the speakers as well. Wife and I liked it so much we bought one for the father inlaw last year. Works great for him too 😉

Only by about $2700 for their POS TV that they knew had defects yet deny. How can you explain them introducing the 36XBR400 and then a month later coming out with the 36XBR450? I still get emails from people on AVS forum telling me about the same issues I had with my TV.
 
i got a 27" wega that has been awesome, not a HD but with dvds it still looks great. go compare for yourself.
 
The RCA 38310 was the best TV ever made (PQ wise) but you cant get them anymore.... they beat the crap outta anything sony though.
 
My fathers Sony 32" WS is doing pretty dam good.

5yrs on and it looks great still.

Next year hopefully get a 43" Pioneer plasma screen 😀

I have a Philips WS 30" HDTV. Picture quality (when compared in best buy to the similar wegas) is about the same, and this TV looks nice. Plus, I've heard sooo many horror stories of recent sony TVs crapping out a day or two after the warranty expires, like clockwork. I bought my TV from costco, where I know I can return it even after the warranty expires.

The 27" Trinitron my parents bought around 85 still works perfectly and has a great picture. My VVega is only a couple years old, but no problems so far. No one I've known personally has had problems with their Sony stuff.
 
I have a Samsung 32inch EDTV which i got for $650 at circuit city. Great set, works perfect with my progressive scan DVD player. A basic sony set similiar to this would have been a couple hundred $$$ more.
 
Plenty have passed the WEGA. This being said, much of what you choose still should come down to your viewing preference (what about a picture makes it look good to you? What's most important? Is it color? black levels? Shadow detail? Geometry? Brightness? Smooth color gradients? Do you like full cartoon like color saturation or natural color saturation? etc), your viewing distance, ambient lighting, and budget.

  • My F707 purchased in mid 1992, has 14,000 images under its belt, with nye a glitch... EVER.
  • CCD-V101 lasted from 1991-1998 when it got caught in the rain & fvcked up.
  • TRV-85 has shot at least 30 two hour tapes since 01-21-99, and played all of them back several times without a hitch... EVER!
  • SL-HF900 was purchased on 07-05-85 and still works PERFECTLY today!
  • KV13TR27 TV purchased on 06-28-93 is still working PERFECTLY!
  • KV-36FS12 purchased 06-30-01 still PERFECT!
  • Clock radio(s) purchased in the '80's, still wakes me every day.
  • Discman purchased several years ago, still works fine.
  • Son's DSC-V1 purchased on 01-21-04 worked perfectly from day one, and still does...
 
as far as TV quality and comparing a TV from 1985 to a TV that was made in 2005, that is completely stupid. TV's now a days are made at FAR LESS quality than they were made in 1985. TV's now a days are made of parts that are produced in bulk and are alot cheaper now than they were back in 1985. Granted the technogy has changed big time, a TV made 20 years ago would outlast a TV made today probably by over 200% life time.

as far as sony wega compared to other TV's, it all depends what you want. my personal opinion, on an LCD RPTV (from what i've seen) is that the new grand wega IV is the best picture wise. Now I personally chose a DLP over an LCD for a few facts, and sony doesn't even have a DLP tv right now. I went with the samsung DLP, and it is far superior to the LCD grand wega that I saw on display. The black colors of LCD's just bother me right now, due to them not being that dark and having a blueish hue to them because the black sort of 'glows'.

saying sony has the best picture is just plain ignorant. saying ANY tv has the 'best' picture is just plain ignorant. it all depends on the situation.

This is why I don't quite get where all these anti-Sony folks are coming from.
 
I have a 27" trinitron I bought around 4 years ago and I love it. Christmas morning it will move into the bedroom to fill up the armoire entertainment center I bought my wife. I leaning towards a toshiba 32" model 32a43 to replace it.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there. It is not completely stupid to compare TVs from 85 and 05. TVs back then were also made of components produced in bulk. The quality TV lines use the quality components that test within a certain tolerance, in 85 and now.
