After multiple complaints of people not being able to get ahold of me when I'm online & our main house line is also busy, and not having the money for a pager until payday, I gave CallWave a try. I'm impressed. The ads it runs are small, the message downloads are quick when you get an incoming call.

Basically the way it works is there's a toll-free number that your calls get routed to when you're online. The caller then records a message, & an instant message is sent to the callwave monitor that's constantly running. You hear a ring, you wait a few seconds, & then you can play the message. If you don't want to get call forwarding on your line, people trying to get ahold of you can call the toll free number directly, enter your phone number, & leave a message that way. That's how I did it, since I don't want call-forwarding. If Sarah wants to get ahold of me, she can.

For those of you on broadband, this won't mean jack sh!t to you, but for those of you on dial-up with a limited number of phone lines (I have two, but the other is the household line. She won't call too late at night on that line, & I use my line for 'net access.), it might be worth a look. Funny thing is I normally hate programs running in the background, I usually won't let anything other than the volume control reside in my system tray. But this one's worth it. And it's free, too.

When I used an "analog" 56k modem I had CallWave. It worked very well, and saved me from getting a 2nd phoneline. :)
