No.
I admit to driving about one block and pulling over. I knew it wasnt worth my life and career. (I was in the Navy at the time.)

I have little sympathy for drunk drivers.
It seems to me if you have the presence of mind to put the key in the door, open it, put the key in the ignition, roll it over, pull out of Park, undo the parking break, and get ouf of the parking lot, then you should have the presence of mind to know what you are doing is WRONG!
Even moreso if you have a manual. It requires a little brain power to operate one of those, even if you've been doing it for a long time. You should be able to figure out you have had too much and need to stop.

Thats exactly what I did the one time I got in my car. I knew it was not smart and I did something about it.
Walked about a mile to a Denny's and had some Coke and Sprite for about an hour.
Walked the mile back to my car and I was all good.

Are you asking if anyone has gotten a DUI or are you asking what your friend should do. First, I have not gotten a DUI. Second, depending on what state you live in a DUI may not be as serious of an offense. And in some states they offer something called a suspended imposition of sentence. You might want your friend to look into it. But in any case a DUI will be expensive to deal with. Best

I never have gotten one, and I never will. I have no sympathy for those sort of people.

What do you mean how did it happen? They all happen the same way, they drink...then they drive away.

Well some folks think they are being sneaky and believe if they drive slow, take the back roads and concentrate really hard, they might be OK. Then they get nailed for not using a turn signal or at a random checkpoint.

You know why the cop pulled you over for not using a signal?
Because he knows that half the people on the road after 1 AM are drunk, and he needs any excuse he can to smell your breath.

The other type of person drives 90 on a city street, crashes into a single mom and her 4 kids and wipes them all out. The driver lives.

So I guess what the OP was asking was: "Did you just get nailed or did you cause a major catastrophe?"

Uhm... that wouldnt be a dui. You need to get caught to get the dui part. You didnt include that in your story. Most drunk drivers get caught for silly things, like a taillight thats out.

I'm not in any way advocating drunk driving, I'm just wondering how prevalent DUI arrests are because it seems that a lot of people in my area have been getting them lately.

Tell them to stop trying to outsmart the cops and start using designated drivers.
Also, encourage the bar to get a van. That has helped a lot for a local hangout of mine.
They dont get trips back of course, but a lot of folks hate walking home because its getting colder. Sometimes they think its worth the risk to drive.

This isn't illegal unless the key is in the ignition. There has to be an intent to drive for it to be a DUI.

I know I've said this before (and started some fights in the process) but the federal government doesnt have any laws on drunk driving. Its handled at the state level. Do you know which state he's in?
Because I know in the Peoples Republic of California this holds true. Intent for them is going out the parking lot with the keys in your hand.
(I was stationed there for three years. Saw LOTS of people get convicted.)

You can be convicted if the key is on your person or anywhere near you...not just in the ignition

true story. that's kinda how I got a ticket. I was going a tad over the limit at the bottom of a hill. he did a field sobriety test on me. Keep in mind this was at 3:30 am and I was under 21 at the time.

Since I'm a college student, I usually go to a bar that's within walking distance from where I live. If I want to go to another bar, taxi with friends and walk back with them FTW.

you.. err, he/she should get a lawyer. they may be able to negotiate it down to a "wreckless driving" offense, much less serious and not criminal in many states. i've seen it done in court.

I got sh!tfaced at a party, then saw that a cop up the road had pulled someone over. Trying to act normal, I pulled up behind him, got out, and pissed in his open window. He must've smelled someone on my breath, as he ended up arresting me and they found out I was a bit over the limit. :(

It was, of course, wreckless driving... But that's something the cops like. "Reckless driving," however, is another story. :p

ex) Cop: "Your honor, the defendant was driving wrecklessly. That is to say, there were no wrecks involved in his trip that night. So, obviously, I followed him home and immediately ticketed him." :D

I was T-boned by a woman who blew through a major intersection when the electricity was out in our town.

I went for a drive to check the my coffee house and on my way home (half block from our house) I was tboned.

My car was destroyed and there was a Policeman right behind me. I had to climb out the passanger side window and when he asked if I was all-right he smelled alcohol on my breath and arrested me. I was in shock but they still gave me a breathalizer and I blew a .11 which at the time was .01 over the limit.

The accident was found to be a no-fault and the DUI was erased from my record after 3 years.

I had to go to alcohol awareness meetings and a Driver Impact Panel. I also had to pay close to $3000 in court fees as well as having to write off my Saab. I also had to spend half a night in prison.

Is it worth it to drink and drive?? FVCK YEA - The romans did it-so can I. I enjoy destroying innocent life.

I really wish there was some sort of system implemented at bars, some sort of breathalyzer that would at least give people an idea of not only their BAC, but also some way of showing how much their reflexes were impaired. If not that, just an easier and more cost effective way to get people home that don't have a designated driver. It's simply sad how many lives are ruined by drunk drivers, I myself saw two young girls hit by a drunk crossing the street once, one of them is now a vegetable. Truly a sad story.
